Assistant Professor in Design University of San Francisco Job Summary: The Design Program at the University of San Francisco (USF ) invites applications for a full-time, one-year term position at the level of Assistant Professor in Design, to begin August 2016. Situated within the Department of Art + Architecture at USF , the Design Program melds innovative graphic design with both digital and interactive media to form a dynamic interdisciplinary curriculum. By introducing students to an expanded definition of design practice, those students gain comprehensive experience with a wide range of process-oriented skills, including concept development, visual rhetoric, formal experimentation, and critical thinking. Located in the heart of San Francisco, the University of San Francisco offers a diverse education in the liberal arts that emphasizes social justice and global engagement. Job Responsibilities: The Design Program seeks candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds who are able to teach studio courses in both print media and digital media design. Successful candidates will be able to teach in at least three of the following areas: design foundations; web design; creative programming; information visualization; interaction design; typography; publication; contemporary issues in design, including considerations of social justice and sustainability. Ideal candidates will be conversant with historical and contemporary issues in the field, regardless of the courses that they teach. Full-time faculty members at USF are responsible for actively engaging and contributing to teaching and service to the University, including student advising and program development. Teaching load is three courses per semester. Minimum Requirements: Qualifications include MFA (or equivalent) in Design, Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Multimedia or a related field; significant and successful teaching experience at the university level; expertise in a range of design practices; equal comfort and fluency in teaching technical and conceptual skills; a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and scholarship in a liberal arts setting; readiness to work collaboratively with faculty across the department (Fine Arts, Art History/Arts Management, and Architecture); willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment; and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University. Applicants should also have a strong exhibition record and a demonstrated ability to participate within a larger art and design community.
