Assistant Professor of New Media, SUNY Purchase

The New Media Program at Purchase College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship starting in fall 2009. Candidates must possess an advanced degree (MFA or equivalency) with a proven exhibition or research record that demonstrates expertise and in-depth involvement in computing and the arts. Evidence of excellence in teaching at the college level, or of potential as an effective teacher, is required. Possible research areas might include (but are not limited to) physical computing, robotics, interaction/performance, algorithmic arts, live video processing, animation and gaming, 3D modeling, virtual environments and locative media. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the potential for funded research that actively involves undergraduates.

Applicants should demonstrate that their work and teaching are both dynamic and innovative in the field of New Media. Teaching responsibilities will include the re-design and teaching of an introductory programming course that engages and challenges New Media and arts majors. The candidate also will be expected to teach courses in his/her area of specialization suitable for students with varied backgrounds. Courses typically include collaborative assignments and formal studio critiques. In keeping with the college’s interdisciplinary commitment, candidates should be willing to develop and teach courses that contribute to Purchase College's general education programs; first-year courses in writing, humanities, and world civilization, or contributions to a collaborative/integrative sophomore arts course are particularly sought.

New Media at Purchase is an interdisciplinary B.A. program that bridges the visual arts, performing arts and liberal arts in which students learn to interact with digital media both as critical consumers and as active producers and involves faculty from across the college. Purchase College is a 4000-student, public liberal arts college, part of the State University of New York system, located on a 500-acre campus 25 miles north of New York City. Purchase College is committed to student-centered, interdisciplinary instruction that integrates curricular and extra-curricular activities.
