Digital view camera / flatbed scaner/3-d laser scan

can any one direct me to where i would start to look for information on adapting a flat bed scanner to work as a 3-d laser scanner. most of the student projects use a web cam that has a limited resolution. I want to build large 3-D files to create surface features that can be machined.
