Oakland, CA: Pro Arts is pleased to present Navigating the New: Bay Area Currents 2013. This juried exhibition features work selected by Michael Schwager, Professor of Art History and Museum Studies and Director of the University Art Gallery at Sonoma State University.

Michael Schwager says of the exhibition, "I met with 15 artists – representing eleven different Bay Area cities – during studio visits, and it was quite a challenge to limit my selections. The final exhibition represents the diversity and range of approaches found in contemporary Bay Area art."

Navigating the New is on view July 2 - August 9, 2013 at Pro Arts’ gallery in downtown Oakland. An Artists’ Reception is scheduled on Friday, July 5, 6-8pm. The Artists’ Talk will take place on Friday, August 2, 6.30pm. Exhibition and events are free and open to the public.

About Bay Area Currents: Bay Area Currents is a critically acclaimed juried exhibition showcasing the region’s top emerging artists. Each year a small number of artists are selected by a nationally recognized curator to represent a snapshot of the energetic and risk-taking work made in the Bay Area today.

About the Juror: Michael Schwager is Professor of Art History and Museum Studies and Director of the University Art Gallery at Sonoma State University. He was Curator of the di Rosa museum in Napa from 2003 to 2009. Prior to joining the Sonoma State faculty in 1991, Michael held positions at the San Francisco Art Institute, the Richmond Art Center, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
