Call to Artists
The following exhibition is open to artists of all mediums. Artist-artist collaborations are encouraged.

 Confirmed dates of exhibition begin April 15 – April 26, 2008. The first venue is Ohio University Gallery under the title: Word of Mouth. Additional venues and events are being sought, and artists are invited to participate in these as well.

 Though some actions are rendered illegal without licensure by the state – such as the practice of law or medicine – creative “practice” is not regulated by government but by convention. This exhibition seeks to present a range of artistic practice, including responsible and irresponsible practices, on the premise that revealing/sharing these will enable us to examine the kinds of creative behavior we (artists) model in community.

 This will be an exhibition of documentation primarily, as we intend to emphasize artistic practice over products. Artists interested in exhibition should prepare documentation of practice, of work, or of theoretical work. “Practice” should be understood as artistic practice, studio practice, or methodology, and works that are currently in-progress. “Work” may include conventional pieces like sculptural objects, paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, etc., and less conventional pieces of experimental, installation, performance, interdisciplinary, and electronic media. “Theoretical work” may include artistic conceptions, works that could be conceived but may never be realized, or works that have been proposed but not executed. Submitted documentation will be included in the exhibition program. Select artists may be invited to include executed/executable works.

Please direct all questions to Nina Caporale at nina@aesthetic.ohio.edu

The MIT Visual Arts Program (VAP) seeks talented, curiosity-driven and creative students to apply for upcoming academic year. This selective two-year program grants successful participants a Master of Science in Visual Studies (SMVisS) degree. Founded in 1988, VAP is embedded in MIT under the aegis of the School of Architecture and Planning and within the Department of Architecture. This unique position encourages a wealth of interdisciplinary exploration and research.

The Program
The MIT Visual Arts Program operates as a production- and education-basedlaboratory within the context of an advanced technological community. Our program explores the wider role and relevance of art in society and considers artistic practice as knowledge production, thus promoting an approach that challenges traditional genres and the limits of the gallery/museum context. Studio investigations and artistic research are realized through performance, video, photography, manufactured objects, electronic systems, interrogative design, as well as through experimental media and newgenre. Central to the curriculum is the potential for students to concurwith other areas of the MIT community. There are endless opportunities to develop collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships with programs and labs in architecture, urban planning, media arts and sciences, mechanical engineering and
other disciplines.

Students & Alumni
Students are encouraged to develop their own artistic vision and to freely explore the unparalleled research and technological resources availableat MIT. Recent areas of critical research engage in the role of art and culture in today's society, from a radio broadcast vehicle (Max Goldfarb '06) to rethinking knowledge production and transmission through artisticmeans (Hope Ginsburg '07). Students participate in outside exhibitions, and projects were recognized through a number of prestigious awards. Alumni have secured coveted fellowships and teaching positions around the globe, and have gained international recognition through exhibitions and events. Hiroharu Mori '04 participated in the 2007 Venice Biennial, JenniferAllora '03, along with Guillermo Calzadilla, participated in the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art, the Istanbul Biennial and the 8th Sharjah Biennial, all in 2007, and Jill Magid '00 had a solo show at the Gagosian Gallery, New York.

Faculty
Instructors are world-renowned artists with active, international careersin artistic production, as well as a strong interest in cross-disciplinedebate and modes of production. Director and Professor, Ute Meta Bauer, is the Director of SITAC VI 2008 in Mexico City, was Co-Curator of Documenta11 and Artistic Director of the 3rd Berlin Biennial. Professor Joan Jonas has a current solo exhibition at MACBA (Museu d’Art Contemporani deBarcelona).
EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL OSNABRÜCK

The motto of the 2008 festival is IDENTITY, reflected in film programmes, lectures and specials. Positioning by the media and artistic self-definitions will be pursued; individual, social and global identities in a rapidly changing world will be explored and queried according to subjective and scientific localisations.

The EMAF is one of the most influential forums of international Media Art. As a meeting point for artists, curators, lenders, gallery owners and an audience of specialists, the festival has had a great impact on the topic and aesthetics of Media Art. Each year the festival offers its visitors a current overview of experimental films, installations, performances, digital formats and hybrid forms, ranging from personal and political subjects or formal experiments to provocative statements.

At the festival an international jury will present the EMAF Award for a trend-setting work in Media Art and the Dialogpreis of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of intercultural exchange. Furthermore, the jury of the German Federal Association of Film Journalists will award the prize for the best German experimental film.

MISSION 17's Fourth Annual Juried Exhibition

Juried by: Clark Buckner (MISSION 17), Jeannene Przyblyski (San Francisco Art Institute), Elaine Santos (MISSION 17), and Meg Shiffler (San Francisco Arts Commission)

December 7, 2007 - January 19, 2008

Opening Reception: Friday, December 7, 2007

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The engine of our economy is fueled by personal and public debt. Credit card bills and student loans weigh heavily on many, and often accrue at interest rates too exorbitant ever to pay off. Mortgages have been extended to people who don't earn enough to cover their costs. And the federal budget is paid by loans from foreign creditors.
Psychologically, the dynamic too often is similar. We over-invest in others - parents, lovers, heroes, and icons - and expect the same in return. We make impossible demands, and suffer the inevitable disappointment of impossible expectations.
But debt entails more than burdens. We owe others also for their support and inspiration, for the lessons they teach and the pleasures they provide us. What we borrow often sustains us, gives us hope, or becomes the basis for self-invention. What we take from our predecessors situates us historically, orienting us in our pursuits and providing us with a sense of our place in the world. And our indebtedness can fill us with gratitude.
We valorize autonomy. But what about the debts we owe to others - are they sources of strength or debilitating? Do they arouse appreciation or shame? What do they reveal about our needs and limitations? What do they say about dependency, guilt, inheritance, and history?
For its fourth annual juried exhibition, MISSION 17 invites submissions of works that, in one way or another, consider the nature of debt.
CALL FOR CHAPTERS
Proposals Submission Deadline: 11/15/2007
Full Articles Due: 2/28/2008
http://www.igi-pub.com/requests/details.asp?ID=238
-- Handbook of Research on Computational Arts and Creative Informatics
Introduction
At the core of the fundamental questions of "what is art" and "what is
technology" we focus The Handbook of Research on computational Arts and
Creative Informatics at the convergence of computer science and artistic
creativity. We seek to discover new ways to conceptualize art and
investigate new methods of self expression through the use of technology.
Here we are inviting experts in a wide range of disciplines to discuss the
emergence of expression and art through that of science, information
technology, computer science, artificial intelligence and many other
related fields. We see this book as a comprehensive recourse where artists
and scientists can collaborate on ideas, practices and experimentations on
these topics. As technology becomes meshed further into our culture and
everyday lives, new mediums and outlets for creative expression and
innovation are abound. We are emphasizing the creative nature of
technology and science itself. How does the human side of technological
achievement influence our creative abilities as technology is a creation
in itself? Has the ontology of the information age influenced society at
the level of both the human and non human? Through this handbook we are
addressing novel concepts from creation, interaction, communication,
interpretation and emergence of art through various technological means
and mediums.
Coverage
The Handbook of Research on computational Arts and Creative Informatics
will provide a comprehensive range of topics regarding the interaction of
the sciences and the arts. Key concepts, theories and innovations
involving the computational side of the arts and other creative
technologies will be discussed. This particular volume will feature
chapters (8,000-10,000 words) written by experts and leading innovators of
their respective fields.
Recommended topics include, **but are not limited to**, the following:
+Essays and Discussion on Art and Technology
+Art and web design
+Fractals, tessellations and Creativity through mathematical expression
+Interactive and computational sculptures and artworks
+Kinetic sculptures
+Creativity as an emergent property of art and science
+The creative process in IT education
+Art created by Artificial Life and Intelligent Agents
+Creativity in computer interface and web design
+Creativity from emergent properties
+Art expressed or created by multi-agent systems
+Virtual spaces and Art of synthetic/ virtual worlds
+Art and expression through information visualization
+Animation, simulation and modeling
+3-D artwork
+Art for the blind and visually impaired- Universal Creativity
+Human expression through cybernetics
+Robotics and Art
+Future trends in Art as influenced by emerging technologies
Submissions
Interested individuals are invited to submit a 1-2 page manuscript on
their proposed chapter by November 15, 2007. We encourage the inclusion of
related topics not mentioned above that may be related to both the theme
of the handbook and your particular research area or expertise. Upon
acceptance of your proposal, you will have until February 28, 2008 to
submit a completed draft of your chapter. A set of guidelines will also be
sent to you upon acceptance. Each potential author will receive
notification on their acceptance status by November 30, 2007. This book is
tentatively scheduled for publishing by Information Science Reference
The Unfaithful Narrator
Studio 27 <www.studio27.org>, showcase for avant-garde film in San Francisco, is organizing a screening of experimental film and video for January 2008. We are looking for work that calls into question the truth status of narration in film, either spoken or as printed text, and that critiques the traditional function of the narrator as a reliable source of information. Of special interest to us are films that examine how narration can reconstruct memory, on both an individual and social level.
Following on the “Death of the Author,” we are looking for work that reevaluates the function of the director’s voice, or the filmmaker’s persona, as a comforting site of narrative stability, verisimilitude, and guarantee of cinematic “reality.” This could take the form of a documentary, for example, that questions the boundaries between the imaginary and the real by incorporating fictional elements in its voiceover narration. Another approach might involve a dramatic framework in which implicit references to actual events via the narration belies the surface semblance of a fictive world.
We are requesting films and videos less than 30 minutes in length submitted on playable DVDs (all region), MiniDVs (NTSC), or data DVDs (as a Quicktime movie file, especially for digital animations).
Submission Deadline (received by): December 15, 2007
Include with your submission a brief written description of the work, and a short filmmaker bio. Also include a SASE if you would like your materials returned to you (only U.S. mail will be returned).
