randomness is the subconscious of machines. dreaming at night, when power
is off, they can't find a way to access their logic operations. so
everything that remains is randomness, generated by rays of energy from
outer space.
far below the power that is needed to turn the machine (or at least parts
of it) on, these tiny amounts of energy generate dreams in anorganic
brains...
but how can one get access to these dreams? filtering possibilities
through randomness allows a machine to express itself. if you look close
enough, you will see the hidden code lying underneath...
Re: [ann][work] internet art for poor people

carlos katastrofsky:
hi,

mmmh... this piece is just a sketch of thoughts that come up sometimes:
art and computer related art especially is always linked to wealth... we
all know this and this is obviously accepted by us all.
but sometimes this makes me think...

about the link in this page:
i think it's not definitely necessary for the piece but the linked site
tells you the current state of affairs and (imho), by that, says something
about the development of the piece's message.

> I like the irony of this page being used in an art project, and
> referring to itself (it, an external component of the artwork) as "The
> Big Picture." :)

thanks...

[...]

> questions of what is/ isn't art and how external objects are
> used & referenced by artists, so I'm tempted to ask what the
> difference is between building the page that you did vs straight up
> linking to it... Or maybe that's what you feel you did...?

i build the page simply because this statuscode normally says something
like "...was not found on this server" which i thought would not be strong
enough.

i don't consider it to be an artwork because this page was built by me...
i think it's the whole thing- the concept and the page, regardless whoever
it made or even if it was not made by anyone (like generative works)- what
makes an artwork. and, of course, the impact on the viewer.

thanks for the link to the mp3 of the panel...

regards,
> Hi Carlos Katastrofsky:-),
> Why don't you take automatic revolver and play that game along?
> Because it's automatic-You are winner!(for sure).You like to win?You
> Russian roulette in our days became synonym mainly for
> Russian Roulette is the title of a 1986 album by German heavy metal
> band Accept.
> Roulette Russe (French for "Russian roulette") is the title of the
> second album of Alain Bashung.
>
> Russian roulette is the practice of placing one round in a revolver,
> spinning the cylinder and closing it into the firearm without looking,
> aiming the revolver at one's own head in a suicidal fashion, and pulling
> the trigger. The number of rounds placed in the revolver can vary. As a
> gambling game, toy guns are often used to simulate the practice. The
> number of deaths caused by this practice are unknown.
>>> >> Subject: RHIZOME_RAW: new name for Net Art News?
>>>     >>
>>>     >>
>>>     >>> Dear readers,
>>>     >>>
>>> >>> I'm writing to solicit your advice. We would like to change
>>>     the name
>>> >>> of Net Art News and I'd like your input on a new name.
>>>     >>>
>>> >>> As Lauren mentioned in a recent note to you, Rhizome is
>>> currently
>>> >>> redesigning our site. This is an exciting moment in which we
>>> are
>>> >>> thinking about all the recent developments in our field and how
>>> >>> Rhizome can reflect, support, and foster them.
>>>     >>>
>>> >>> On the editorial side, my goal with Net Art News has been to
>>>     broaden
>>> >>> our scope and reach, getting more international in our
>>>     coverage and
>>> >>> also covering not only internet art but also software art,
>>> >>> performance, sound art, data visualization, technology-enabled
>>>     >>> social
>>> >>> sculpture, locative media, video, and the myriad other branches
>>>     >>> of new
>>>     >>> media practice.
>>>     >>>
>>> >>> While we are by no means giving up on net art, the title Net
>>> Art
>>>     >>> News
>>> >>> no longer reflects the breadth of the publication. The first
>>> and
>>> >>> simplest title that comes to mind is 'Media Art News,' but of
>>>     course
>>> >>> this is potentially dry. I'm also not necessarily looking to
>>>     split
>>> >>> hairs over the phrases 'media art' and 'new media art.' The
>>> title
>>> >>> needs to be rather short, self-descriptive, and hopefully also
>>>     >>> inviting.
>>>     >>>
>>> >>> What are your suggestions? Any feedback would be greatly
>>>     >>> appreciated.
>>> >>> If you'd like to refamiliarize yourself with Net Art News, you
>>> can
>>> >>> look up previous pieces, by month, here:
>>>     >>>
>>>     >>>
>>>     >>> With thanks,
i'm currently experimenting with del.icio.us - tags. the idea is to make an exhibition which can be seen in various layers thanks to tagging...
have a look: http://del.icio.us/carlos.katastrofsky
this project is a work in progress and started recently after a discussion about curating with marisa s. olson and luís silva here: http://vercodigofonte.blogspot.com/2005/11/on-blogging-as-curating.html and while reading the comments on rhizome about lev manovich's article "Remix and Remixability"...
by now it's just a concept/ sketch, but:
comments are always welcome!
regards,
this is a bit difficult to answer for me. a piece of net.art itself isn`t more or less effective in different languages, unless it deals with the additional layer of "language" itself. but language is a point in making net - related art. to me its very important to discuss some pieces because a kind of "audience" is always a part of it. either the people i discuss with on different topics or the ones who look at my stuff and react upon it. in this sense the language makes a piece more effective,because if i do something in english more people react to it. i tried many times to start discussions or presenting pieces on german (which is my native language) mailinglists. the only answers came from a troll...
and, in fact, real >discussions< on these lists are generally very rare.

-----------
painting vs. coding

- is programming just a skill or an artistic process?
i think both is possible. i once got to know a sculptor who made exactly the sculptures he had (eidetic) in mind/ planned. so sculpting was just a tool to visualize his thoughts/ cocepts. on the other hand there are many who use sculpting as a process. i think it's the same with programming, so in my opinion the question if someone has to have programming skills or not to be a "new media" - artist isn't the point. important is just the quality of what he/ she does (and i don't think here in "good" or "bad" - terms).

------------
"art"

to me it's very interesting that most of the people here use the term "art" for their work. i'm far from judging if something is actually art or not, but why "art"? in my opinion the term itself focusses (strictly seen) on something that began with the renaissance and ended in the 19th century - l'art pour l'art. before this it was just an attribute of religion, afterwards it's more a kind of discourse.

carlos katastrofsky:
this was a kind of an emotional statement, partly to the readers, partly to myself. sometimes i'm missing questions that people on the street would ask, so i asked myself which questions this could be and which clichés are around this type of art...
so, to me it's like this:
1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 are standard questions about works from the art - field
3, 9, 10 are more related to net (or even web-) art.
(two notes:
9) i personally don't think a hacker is a criminal - far away from that. but normally for most of the people it's like hacker = cracker = bad = ...
10) deals with the "nerd" - clichè: people sitting in front of their computers with no contacts to the "real" world)
(surely these 10 questions are not enough, but it was just a momentary reaction)

and, yes: judsoN, i think you said much of what i am not able to say this way (my english, writing skills...)

thanks for reacting!

regards,
carlos

> Why should a net artist be awareof these questions?
>
> I think I am missing the point
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/08/08/vienna_netart_commun.html
there are some discussions going on here in vienna about this, ranging from "idiotic nerd stuff" to "the solution to all our problems"...
has anybody heard of somehow similar projects ? any experiences?
carlos katastrofsky:
dear all,
the video series SINS (stands for Sins Is Not Surface) is now finished, the last two parts are online.
find it here:
http://aqua.subnet.at/carlos/projekte/media/sins

::::
the video series SINS deals with different concepts of human “layers”. each of the five parts of SINS focuses on one of the following terms: surface, skin, fashion, architecture and screen.

the footage of each movie has been exclusively extracted from the web by means of searchengines and consists of approx. 1500 pictures as well as numerous audio- and videofiles. the short movies are - according to their thematical focus - technically constructed as tense representations of the www - material.
::::

comments are welcome!

regards,
