Let's Get Physical - Arduino Workshop Lisbon

Hi,

Just to inform you about a workshop that CADA - Atmosferas Digital Arts Cen=
ter is organizing: "Let's Get Physical - Physical Computing with Arduino",=
Lisbon, 3-6- May, Massimo Banzi.

About Arduino (www.arduino.cc)
Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple i/o=
board and a development environment that implements the Processing languag=
e. Arduino can be used to develop stand-alone interactive objects or can be=
connected to software on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, Max/MSP). =
The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open-sou=
rce IDE can be downloaded for free.

About the Workshop
The Arduino philosophy is based on making design rather then talking about =
it. It is a constant search for faster and more accurate ways to build bett=
er prototypes. We have explored many prototyping techniques and developed w=
ays of thinking with our hands.

This workshop has a strong practical component. At the end of the workshop =
participants will devellop a mini-project.

About Massimo Banzi (It)
Massimo Banzi is the co-founder of Arduino. Currently teaches Physical Inte=
raction Design at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea. Has worked on int=
eractive design projects for clients like Prada, Artemide and Adidas. He is=
the co-founder of the Interaction Design Lab (www.interactiondesign-lab.co=
m)
Personal site: http://www.potemkin.org.

About CADA - Atmosferas Digital Arts Center
CADA - Atmosferas is a Digital Arts Center, in Lisbon, Portugal interested =
in promoting the dialogue between art, science and technology. Atmosferas o=
rganizes a number of different events (conferences, exhibitions, etc) and s=
upports the production and the distribution of artistic work done for the d=
igital realm. In practical terms Atmosferas supports and is engaged in the p=
roduction of new media artistic and experimental work, develops curatorial =
projects in several mediums (internet, audiovisual, exhibitions, etc.), and=
stimulates reflection through the organization of conferences and workshop=
s.

About the Workshop

The mobile phone has reached a level of adoption that far exceeds that of
the personal computer. As a result, they are an emerging platform for new
services and applications that have the potential to change the way we live
and communicate.

Mobile Processing is an open source project that aims to drive this
innovation by increasing the audience of potential designers and developers
through a free, open source prototyping tool based on Processing and the
open sharing of ideas and information. This workshop will introduce the
Mobile Processing project and prototyping tool and provide hands-on
instruction and experience with programming custom applications for the
mobile phone.

Contents:
- Introduction to Mobile Processing, phone hardware and development
platforms.

- Survey of projects with the phone as both the platform and subject for new
forms of interactive applications and electronic art.
- Basic programming and prototyping concepts with 2D graphics and
animation.
- Phone input/output handling including keyboard, camera, sound and
vibration.
- Internet networking. Parsing and generating XML-formatted data.
- Text messaging and Bluetooth networking.

The workshop will be practical and at the end every participant will develop
a personal exercise.
