three-part event series with art intervention

image

Cultures of Economics is a three-part event series by the Federal Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich with an art intervention by Karina Smigla-Bobinski.

7 May 2010 > Insights - Marvellous Markets
4 June 2010 > Shifting Perspectives - Economics in Spite of Ourselves
25 June 2010 > New Vistas - Desire to Win!

Location > Radialsystem V, Holzmarktstr. 33, Berlin

Event
In light of the current financial crisis, it has become more urgent than ever before to change and improve the way we do business. Economic practice is also a form of cultural practice - and one of particular interest. How has the relationship between economics and culture evolved historically? How does economic practice function in other contemporary cultures? And most importantly, what kind of economic world can and should we strive for in the future? These are some of the questions which leading economists, scholars and cultural artists will discuss at the event series “Cultures of Economics” to be held on three days in May and June 2010.

> Conference languages > German and English (with simultaneous translation)

Art programme
The artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski has developed a changing installation for each conference in the event series. Her work plays on the motif of “joss paper” which is burned at traditional Chinese ancestor worship ceremonies and New Year celebrations. Originally used as paper money, many people nowadays use joss paper to make life-size papier-mâché models of Western brand-name products. The artist has acquired copies of Western consumer goods from the Asian market and will present them here in a new context.

Film programme
The film curator Florian Wüst will present three short film programmes, each of which is based on the theme of the corresponding conference. The programme, comprised of historical and contemporary experimental, documentary, advertising and corporate promotional films, contrasts the thematic content of the conferences from an analytical or artistic-ironic perspective. The film programmes blend both the past and present, and fiction and reality, as they examine the economic reconstruction of post-war Europe, the industrial automation processes of the 20th century, changing ethical standards among managers, global labour conditions and the vision of a carbon-free future.

DATES
start for Application: April 12th, 2010
in situ project in Munich: May 13th - 15th, 2010

BACKGROUND
This project consists of two parts.

PART 1. > IN-SITU
An installation in public space in Munich, Germany taking place in May 2010 together with screenings of posted input from Query-onlineart-project. Google Maps will be taken from the virtual into real space: big balloon, shaped like Google mark, floating above the Court Church of All Saints in Munich Residenz, visible at day and night, with question mark/query on them, querying the churches below such as:

Is God only a delusion?
What is concealed behind the religions ?
Where are they positioned in our lives ?
Which place are we ready to give them ?
Are only supernumeraries in the battle of giants ?
Do we still need houses of God such as churches, mosques or temples ?
Are we giving the Internet and economics too much authority once again?
Didn't the presidential elections in Iran prove, that the internet, with its state of secularism, can be used as a resistance, too?
And what role does atheism play in our society, bringing with it a naturalistic world-view?
Or agnosticism with its' secular, evolutionary-humanistic ethics?

PART 2. > ONLINE
takes place in Internet and is meant as a open art project and discussion platform and existed since September 2010.

OPEN CALL
Artists, cultural workers and anyone else interested in this discussion concerning confessions, believers, atheists and agnostics from all over the world are invited to put their queries, suggestions, comments, point of view or their feedback in terms of video, pictures or text, in Internet. A website www.query-online.net was created in order to enable a platform for all that feedback. On this website a Google-Map-Site is incorporated with the same mark as in Munich. Thanks to all the tools provided by Google Maps, we can add images, videos and comments to the maps. The visitors in Situ and online can literally visualize their opinions and are encouraged to comment on for that asked forum.
