Part-time Faculty Position in Advanced 3D Modeling for Animation

The Department of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago seeks a part-time faculty member with the rank of Instructor to teach in its Experimental 3D Animation area. In the Advanced 3D Modeling course students learn various 3D modeling techniques in Autodesk Maya, and apply skills to the development of characters, objects, and environments for outputs such as cinematic media, installations, and games. Students prepare and construct models for animation and character rigging, and apply intermediate and advanced texturing.

Qualifications: Candidates should hold BFA or MFA degrees, and have demonstrable skills in the technologies of the course as well as their applications in experimental Media Art. Instructor-rank faculty are issued contracts by semester, which are dependent upon course enrollment.

New Media Artist/Designer: The Department of Visual Communication seeks a full-time faculty member working in web- or video-based communication design and/or interactive media, to play a lead role in the development and coordination of the new media track in Visual Communication, and to teach screen-based graphic design to graduate and undergraduate students within an interdisciplinary context. Candidates should have a strong conceptual, historical and methodological grasp of issues in the intersecting worlds of graphic design and new media, such as digital content configuration, navigation, interpretation and production.

Specific competencies might include typographic structure and expression; hybrid environments; planning and production of motion graphics for television and film; research and development of cultural and environmental issues; and/or contemporary visual cultural criticism. The successful candidate will interface with other media departments in the School to articulate and integrate visual communication objectives and potentialities in the School’s media initiatives. Teaching experience and a terminal degree in visual communication, design or other relevant area is essential. Applicants should have an active design and/or art practice.

The position is full-time, tenure-track, rank and salary commensurate with experience and begins the fall of 2006.

The Department of Film, Video, and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago invites applications from artists working in video to teach and expand an innovative curriculum in moving image media. We are looking for artists who work with various applications of video/digital media, experimental narrative and non-fiction forms, installation, video performance, interactive environments and web-based work. Candidates should have a strong conceptual and historical grasp of contemporary issues in the intersecting worlds of independent video production, experimental filmmaking, and new media. The department is committed to alternative forms and practices that emphasize experimentation, innovation, and the hybridization of existing media and modes of presentation. Candidates should demonstrate the ability and desire to participate in curricular initiatives; should be able to work with undergraduate and graduate students in an interdisciplinary, fine arts context; and should have advanced proficiency in one or more areas of the media arts. Applicants must have an active professional creative practice. Teaching experience preferred. The position is full-time, tenure-track and begins in the fall of 2006. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.
