Russell Richards is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Media Arts and Society, Southampton Solent University. He is a digital artist working in installation, print, application and web production. He has written on digital aesthetics and interactivity: “An Aesthetic or Anaesthetic? Developing a Digital Aesthetics of Production”, Journal of Media Practice 5 (3) March 2005 and “Users, Interactivity and Generation” New Media and Society 8 (4). Richards’ digital artwork includes, a virtual installation ‘Memory is Made of This’; a music generator installation 'DiskO'; 'Covertor', a digital art creation application, 'Nebula' gas cloud generator and ‘Cascader’ a generative music installation.

Since November 2005, Richards has been working with Maurice Owen, a sonic artist. He has experimented with inter-relating sound produced by a variety of instruments and code-derived digital art triggered by frequency analysis. These workshops have developed into the concept of ‘KikiT’ Visuosonic Performance involving the data projection of images produced through the software. In July 2006 KikiT was premiered at a workshop at Southampton Solent University. This workshop was followed by two, well received, gigs in Sofia, Bulgaria.

KikiT then performed with Nicholas Batter, trumpeter, at Grange Du Faign Gallery, Jamoigne, Belgium in October 2006 again to good reviews. Since then Richards has performed with Owen at the International Jazz Festival in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, UK; the Musee D’Art Modern, Liege, Belgium together with the SB Brass Ensemble; the Technarte: Art and Technology Conference, Bibao, Spain; the Virtual Systems and Multimedia (VSMM’07) Conference, Brisbane, Australia; the Interactive Futures Conference, Victoria, Canada and the Eye-Music Exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, UK. Performance/presentations took place in 2008 at the International Symposium on Electronic Arts ISEA 2008 Singapore July and Electronic Visualisation and the Arts (EVA) the British Computer Society London UK, July 08.

More recently, KikiT VisuoSonic were invited to be part of the London Design Festival at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2010. Linear video was mixed with interactive visuals in real-time to create “The 11th Tapestry” installation. This was a 'digital tapestry' projected along side 500-year-old tapestries in gallery 94 of the V&A. Review available here: http://poesy-praxis.com/tag/kikit-visuosonic/

In 2011, Russell has also created “Meshwork”, a music-derived linear animation was accepted by Trampoline, a UK-based digital arts platform. Under their “Urban Screens” initiative which will be bringing films to public locations around the world in 2012/2013. This also led to 'Meshwork' being accepted for the Public Art Screens database. 'AI_AT', an artificial intelligence digital art installation was successfully submitted to the 'Digital Design Festival' part of the London Design Festival of 2012. Video available here: http://bit.ly/AI_AT

Areas of research interest include: Interactive audio-visuals, sound derived textile patterns, smart buildings, interactive performances, responsive environments, museum/gallery based installations, public art apparatuses and, most recently, music-derived linear animations.
