BIO
In his artistic work Roch Forowicz focuses on the issue of city surveillance, the fact of being constantly observed by CCTV systems and of data being processed all the time. His activities are radical and often described as illegal ‘hacktivist’ interventions, whose aim is taking over and using surveillance devices against the will of their creators.

He has been working at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Organising Upgrade!Warsaw since 2007. Curator and co-founder of 2.0 gallery in Warsaw. Participant of many expositions and festivals, such as FILE festival (BR), HAIP Festival (SI), Liwoli09 (AT), Paraflows 09 (AT), Urban Research (DE), Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej - Zamek Ujazdowski (PL), Komuna Otwock, Entropia, STUDIO, WEF, Krytyka Polityczna, Culture 2.0, Beautiful Lies, Copernicus Science Center etc.

Pornea

Dates:
Sat Dec 12, 2009 00:00 - Sat Dec 12, 2009

Location:
Poland

'Pornea' is a deeply symbolic pornographic movie aimed at evoking both sexual excitement and mystic experience, as well as aesthetic experience. Due to its allusive and fully computer-generated form, the project falls beyond the scope of contemporary censorship mechanisms.

The Pornea project includes materials subliminally stimulating the recipient (content active both by means of sound and view).

Actions in the 'Interception' series refer to the city surveillance culture, i.e. permanent surveillance with the use of CCTV cameras, software and devices processing and storing information. The actions are deep-rooted in the idea of hacktivism, consisting in the interception and usage of technological solutions against the will of their creators.

This time the 'Interception' project was implemented in Linz (European Capital of Culture 2009). Consequently to illegal actions, CCTV cameras along the main street, Landstrasse, as well as the central camera monitoring Hauptplatz, were damaged. The author left the 'Panopticon' sign at the place of intervention.

The action was illegal.

Political-spam

For three months, Warsaw offices of Polish Deputies were inundated with spam relating to the increasingly vital problem of Surveillance Culture - social surveillance carried out by means of technological devices.
In the materials sent to the Deputies, the author emphasized that decisions regarding such important changes, interfering with everyday environment of Polish citizens, should be made in the spirit of democracy, i.e. taking public opinion into account.

'I would like to suggest highlighting the issue of the broadly defined monitoring in the media, with the participation of experts and intellectuals, which would initiate social discourse and thus contribute to the creation of a legal framework taking due account of the public’s will'.

The Political-spam campaign resulted in many letters exchanged and meetings organised with politicians. The effect of the campaign was to sensitise Polish Deputies to the abovementioned issues, as well as to communicate the information that at least part of the society does not want to live under constant surveillance.

The Deputies submitted the materials to the Justice and Human Rights Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. They will be taken into consideration in the further works of the Committee.

Panopticon

Dates:
Tue Dec 02, 2008 00:00 - Tue Dec 02, 2008

Location:

Panopticon is an installation consisting of eighteen CCTV cameras, arranged in two parallel rows and partly submerged in concrete. The concrete mass covering 100m2 (Gallery room) will be bristled with glassy vandal-resistant domes. Transparent shields hide the lens of CCTV cameras aimed at monitoring of public space. Through its very form, the installation directly refers to the issue of Surveillance Culture - social surveillance carried out by means of technological devices. This problem has been entering our everyday lives in an increasingly aggressive way for some time now, since the borders of our privacy are being constantly explored, penetrated and gradually took over.
The Panopticon installation puts the viewer in an unusual space which, due to its form and mysterious ambiguity, inspires a moment of reflection. The viewer is surrounded by operating monitoring devices; he can hear them working, yet he does not know whether he is being recorded by a single camera or by all of them. And if he is being recorded, what will happen to the material on which he has been registered?

Looking for hosting gallery and financial support.

The surveillance camera, being used to monitor public space, was hijacked in a city of Ljubljana. On location, where the CCTV camera had been disabled, the author left a mark- the word „Panopticon”, which pointed to the meaning of the action. Camera and documentation of the intervention were exhibited in a Gallery in Ljubljana after the event.

The action was illegal.

“InterceptionExtended” is a continuation of “Interception I” and “Interception II” projects.
