Robert Appleton is an interdisciplinary artist, engaged in the performance and research of
Visual Music. In 1979 he emigrated to the US from SCotland, and founded Appleton Design. He has worked with BBC Televison, IBM, Herman Miller, Verve Records, John Cage and Ornette Coleman. His work has been published internationally and has received awards from AIGA, D&AD, the Warsaw Biennale and Graphis. He was elected to Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2001 and made Canadian President in 2008. Before moving to Ryerson, he taught at Cooper Union, Parsons School of Design, and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. His “About Time: A Theory of Design, Music and the Play Instinct” was published by Index book in 2009.
