Re: Electronic Folk Art?!

Actually, perhaps the whole circuit bending genre, which depends
entirely on a "naive style" approach to reverse engineering, might be
one of the first that could be defined as folk art. I really like this
idea.

Is there a New Media "Outsider Art"?

DISCUSSION

Happy holidays to all...

Sorry to be so understated this year - not usually my MO.
Expect to hear a lot more from me in the coming year.

However, best from Leigh & I, & IA.

DISCUSSION

Re: why so little discussion?

I think that in many cases, there hasn't been that much to discuss.
There's been a lull in good work, or at least meaty thought on the
subject.
I think a new wave is coming with the consideration of the historical,
but I got a note for a new book on the history of new media from
1715-1914?

Ok, I'm going to get this volume, but this seems like a book that is
constructing a historical context that may or may not be there. What I
call a, "Tactical Reality" to validate New Media.

Under my criteria, New media really has to do with electronic
computation as one of its core components. Therefore, I really doubt
that anyone's going to make a good argument for what we conceive as new
media art before the 60's.

Back to the discussion topic.

I for one have been swamped. I'm entering academia at the moment, and I
had no idea what demands they were going to impose. Also, I've been
putting together ideas for larger texts, which is another matter
entirely.

And of course, IA & the Yes Men (when I have something to do for them)
keep me hopping.

DISCUSSION

Re: Sorry Everybody

I tend to agree that this is a great gesture.
I am also very happy to see that they have stopped the project.
One of the largest problems that I see in this day and age is what I
call "The Exhaustion of the Symbol", in which the repetition of any
idea, symbol, gesture, expression drains it of meaning. This has been a
concern in regards to US medical practice, which has begun to
standardize methods of contriteness for mistakes.

I don't want to say I'm sorry, I want to BE apologetic and try to live
it.

And as an unrelated missive, I just learned that McDonalds is beginning
to use call centers to outsource order taking at drive thrus.

Makes my outsourced art seem quite tame in comparison.

This is very touching.
FYI
Lee

Some of us < hopefully most of us < are trying to understand and
appreciate
the effect our recent election will have on you, the citizens of the
rest of
the world. As our so-called leaders redouble their efforts to screw you
over, please remember that some of us < hopefully most of us < are
truly,
truly sorry. And we'll say we're sorry, even on the behalf of the ones
who
aren't.
