BIO
Nicholas Economos is an artist and educator living in sunny Cleveland, Ohio, USA. His art practice includes work in software art, reactive media art, sound, video, and animation. He is an Editor Emeritus for Rhizome.org at The New Museum of Contemporary Art in NYC, previously editing content for the web site and the Rhizome Rare email list over numerous years. His awards include an Individual Artist Project Grant in Film, Media, and New Technology Production from the New York State Council on the Arts and an Individual Excellence Award in Media Arts from the Ohio Arts Council.

He has exhibited at Art Interactive in Cambridge, MA, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, NY, Art in General in New York City, Fylkingen in Stockholm, Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, SESI Gallery in Sao Paulo City, Window Project Space in Auckland, New Zealand, Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, Chiangmai New Media Art Festival in Thailand, DigiFest DXNet in Toronto, and the Cyberarts Festival in Boston. He has been a frequent artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, New York and is included in the DVD anthology, "ETC: 1969 - 2009" covering 40 years of video arts at ETC. He was previously a visiting professor with the Department of Expanded Media at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University in Alfred, NY and now teaches in the T.I.M.E.-Digital Arts Department at The Cleveland Institute of Art.

Mod 70s Show OPEN CALL

LiveBox Gallery issues an open call for its’ Mod 70s show. Single channel video and animation interpreting or inspired by the pop culture happening labeled “MOD 70s”, will be screened at Hejfina, in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago. Hejfina is a boutique on a main shopping street in Chicago. The space also serves as an interactive design lab, hosting installations by up and coming Chicago artists and various speakers on current topics in art and architecture. All submissions must be suitable for open public viewing. Work will be screened through Hejfina’s shop window and inside the store. Work screened on the window monitor will not have audio. Inside monitors will have audio and video.

Submissions must be received by October 1st.

Format: All entries must include a "digital" (CD) resume, bio, artist statement and short synopsis of the project, and jpg images. Video should be NTSC DVD, if your piece is in PAL, please send mini DV tape. Please use a standard DVD case (7”X5”) not a cassette case, and pack in bubble envelop. Note materials will not be returned, unless specifically requested. Please note whether you would be willing to screen your work silently on the window monitor.

second call for papers


You might have already heard of, or even already be a contributor to, the VJ Theory project.
If you haven't then the project falls into two areas: samples of work from the forthcoming book and the project/community which lives at:

vjtheory.net

This project intends to develop a community actively discussing and reflecting on philosophy and theory related with Vjing and realtime interaction.

It is apparent, during workshops and discussions at Festivals and symposia, that practitioners of both VJing and Interactive Installations will quickly move on from problems with the practicalities of production to more complex ideas of how and why the process has, for example, significance for the viewer.

There is a lack of written texts on the philosophies and theories related with VJing and realtime interaction.

This project and the associated book, aim to bring together work by some of the foremost practitioners and academics in the field.

We aim to produce a body of work which, for the first time, will address these theoretical issues and place the practices of VJing and Interactive Installation, into a useful context.

Although we have received an excellent response in contributions for the book, there are also areas that, we as editors, feel need to be developed more.

Areas we still need material:

Politics (activism, guerrilla, community focused realtime interaction and performance) Intellectual property DIY culture Realtime interaction and performance as developing tools (pd/GEM/Arduino or MAX/MSP/Jitter as used in performance programming for example) Body

If you know of any text which address these areas in relation to realtime interaction (either published or not) then please let us know.

We also welcome other contributions you might have to the content of the web site

Thanks to the latest issue of NEURAL (see http://english.neural.it ) i just discovered some great (e-)music at http://www.electricsongs.com/ by musician-educator Bob Gluck.

One of his max/msp-expanded instruments is an eShofar:

"The traditional shofar is an ancient instrument whose purpose is not strictly musical. The shofar blast - in our day, mostly limited to the Jewish High Holy Days - provides a call to reflection, an alarm, a wake-up call ... Digital processing of the sounds allows one to listen 'inside' the sound of the shofar. " eShofar1 <http://www.electricsongs.com/eShofar/eshofar1_interface.html> (2001 - 2005) is held by the right hand, enclosed within an I-Cube sensor glove. Finger movements upon the body of the shofar thus control the filtering and other sound processing, that is achieved by means of a custom designed Max / MSP software interface.

eShofar2 <http://www.electricsongs.com/eShofar/eshofar2_interface.html> (2005) uses complex algorithms to create a chaotic improvisational system based on the live performed sounds of the shofar.

"The performer can toggle on an algorithm that tracks repeated notes and perfect fifths, both common traditional shofar sound gestures, which may influence the system." There's a great but tiny video of one of his performances in Vienna, i think.

ROOMIKS CUBE is a multichannel panoramic A/V performance. Part of the ongoing MUX A/V series, this rare event is a collaborative effort between live video performance artists C-TRL Labs and NY based electronic composer Caural. Specially tailored to Monkeytown's minimalist cubic interior, C-TRL will utilize motion graphics, 3D and realtime software (Modul8 and Max/MSP Jitter) to create an environmental extension to the existing architectural space. Caural sets the tone w/ flowing abstract compositions in a rich sonic space. The audience will be immersed in a whirl of architectural landscapes and organic forms and tones in both performers playful experimental styles.

r.b.w. is an ongoing live audiovisual set associated with colors, shapes and forms. The set consists of 3 abstract live visuals that associate three primary color states; red, blue and white. Based on chromotherapy studies, specific colors bring balance to our physical and emotional systems. Each selected set of three colors(as samples) brings different stimulations and effects. as most of you know, the tank is a nonprofit performing arts space in lower manhattan. we believe in maintaining a space for artists in manhattan where they can perform and explore without feeling the financial pressures that manhattan increasingly brings.
We have been in our new home in Tribeca with Collective:Unconscious for almost a year now (!) and it is so nice to not be writing you all on a weekly basis telling you we are losing our home, like we had to do for the first few years of existence.
However, we are still struggling to get by in the big city. But we dont plan on staying that way! oh no.

To that end, we are proud to be launching our Freedom of Expression Campaign. The goal is to raise $100,000 over the next few months to help us secure our somewhat tenuous foothold on the big apple, increase and stabilize our administrative staff, and continue bringing you fantastic, affordable programming for the years to come.

yes, i agree...
I really don't have a simple thought that doesn't involve appropriation or sampling on some level. your painting and the photograph involve both but are different resolutions. Refusing that doesn't have to be a generational thing, as in when you were born or what sort of music you have been exposed to. Being able to accept it may be a bent of mind that is reinforced from being creative with a computer though, i hope so, but unfortunately the person suing you hasn't been bitten by that yet.
