BIO
The swiss / luxembourgish artist has studied painting and video art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf, Germany. In 1990, the artist stayed for 6 months in Paris at the 'Cité Internationale des Arts' with a grant. Since 1993, Thyes participates in exhibitions and festivals.
Since 1999, the artist focuses on videoart, animation, digital imagery and photography.
In 2004, her participatory animation project FLAG METAMORPHOSES was funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
In 2005, her video ASCENSION won the 'Depict! Award' at Encounters Shortfilm Festival in Bristol, UK. Her animation 'EU 2020 ?' took part in the KunstFilmBiennale in Cologne (DE) and 2006 at 'KW institute for contemporary art' in Berlin.
Since 2006, Thyes has presented FLAG METAMORPHOSES at festivals and exhibitions internationally. FLAG METAMORPHOSES received the Multimedia Prize 2006 at Avanca Festival, Portugal.
In 2007, the video installation MALTA AS METAPHOR was funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, and FLAG METAMORPHOSES was shown at URBAN SCREENS Conference + Public Art Events in Manchester (UK).
2008, FLAG METAMORPHOSES was shown at 'Nothing to declare. Triennial of Contemporary Art Oberschwaben', Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen (DE). In Aug. and Sep., the artist worked in Glasgow with a grant.
In 2009, Thyes presented a solo show at Kunstverein Rhein-Sieg in Siegburg (DE). FLAG METAMORPHOSES was exhibited in the group show 'Building Paradise' at 7+Fig Art Space, Los Angeles (USA).
2010, FLAG METAMORPHOSES was installed at Halle Zehn / CAP Cologne, Koeln (DE). November (till January 2011): solo show at Kunstverein Bochumer Kulturrat, Bochum (DE).
2011, January - March: Participation in group exhibition 'Songs of the Swamp' at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Vienna, Austria. July - September: CONNECT, group exhibition at Shedhalle Zurich, Switzerland.

A collaborative / participatory art project for the internet
- a continuously growing animation with many authors:
The flags of every nation in the world will transform
into each another in a flash animation.

Basis for the visual realisation of the flag transformations:
1. The symbols displayed on the flags and their meanings;
2. The relationships between countries - historical, cultural, political, religious, economic.
Whereas most flags have predominantly simple geometric forms, in the transformation phase irregular, amorphous, organic and symbolic shapes can emerge (and disappear again). The aim is therefore not only to transform and disrupt the visual composition but also to add shapes and figures to it which express some connection to the country of the next flag. - Based on this concept, I would like to invite any interested parties from as many countries as possible to develop and design a scene for the animation: the transformation from one flag into another.
