The Lower East Side Printshop, established in 1968, is a New York City non-profit art center that supports contemporary artists of all creative backgrounds by offering them studio space, career services, and expertise in printmaking to develop new work. Artists can experiment, explore new ideas, and collaborate with experienced master printers to create important new work and broaden their practice in a supportive and professional environment. In addition, a diverse audience of art enthusiasts and professionals alike can learn about and collect prints in our classes, lectures, and exhibitions.

The Printshop is the largest openly accessible print studio in the city. It offers independent and collaborative residencies for artists, free and fee-based, contract printing services for small and large publishers, educational opportunities in all aspects of the print field and at all levels of expertise, and affordable collecting opportunities. The Printshop supports innovation and experimentation with the medium, and promotes non-toxic materials and processes.

Keyholder Residency Program

The Lower East Side Printshop, NY offers emerging artists with FREE year-long studio residencies to develop new work and foster their artistic careers. The application deadline is September 1, 2014 for residencies that begin on October 1, 2014. Printmaking facilities are available for intaglio, relief, monoprint, waterbased silkscreen, digital processes, and other techniques that employ the tools at hand.

Keyholders work independently in the Printshop’s shared Artists’ Studio and have access to a vibrant community of peers. Artists from all disciplines are eligible to apply; printmaking skills are not required, but some familiarity with the medium is recommended. Basic instruction in printmaking and some Master Printer assistance is included in the program.

Participation is limited and competitive. Applications are evaluated by a panelist of seasoned artists, curators, critics, and art professionals based on the quality of submitted artwork. Artists currently without a studio space are encouraged to apply.

Keyholder Residency includes:
• 24-hour studio access
• $1,000 stipend
• storage space
• basic supplies (newsprint, blotters, solvents, cleaners)
• one free class in printmaking and consultations with Master Printers
• 20% discount on all Printshop classes
• free career development workshops
• free digital documentation of selected works produced during the residency
• inclusion in the Printshop's permanent collection
• opportunities to show new work in exhibitions presented by the Printshop

Eligibility:
• Only legal US residents may apply (i.e., Social Security cardholders)
• Students enrolled in any kind of degree program at the time of the residency are not eligible

Lower East Side Printshop is pleased to present In and Out of Context guest curated by Hallie Ringle, Curatorial Assistant at The Studio Museum in Harlem. The exhibition will be on view at the Printshop from July 16 – September 21, 2014 with a public reception on Wednesday, July 30, from 6-8pm.

The prints in this exhibition stem from a common sense of disconnection. Some of the works display a literal sense of division, as is the case in Golnar Adili’s Work Pillow (2013) and Patience (2013). Others include disembodied objects that allude to voices, objects, and context unseen such as Bundith Phunsombatlert’s Blank Sheet of Paper 1 (2014) who removes words from a protestor’s sign, echoing both a silent protest in Thailand as well as issues of access, equality and freedom of expression. Similarly, Camilo Godoy’s minimalist presidential signature, Ronald Reagan (AIDS, War on Drugs, Central America, etc.) (2014), and x-ray images of migrants Guests and Aliens (2014) are divorced from visual context yet simultaneously entrenched in the politics of the era.

Several artists use objects that are separated from their original circumstances as tools or inspiration. Printmaker Daniel Vasquez utilizes found processed plywood, severed from its intended use, to create large woodblock prints reminiscent of Ghanaian Adinkra fabrics. Likewise, Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann samples freely from braids of hair, motifs from Beijing opera costumes and other forms of adornment, removing each disparate pattern from its common setting and placing them in conversation on the same printed and painted paper. Whether expressed as a physical or contextual condition or used as tools and inspiration, each artist in this exhibition engages with a sense of division from a political or cultural world.

About the Artists
GOLNAR ADILI (b. 1976, Falls Church, VA; lives and works in New York, NY) received her BFA from University of Virginia and MA from University of Michigan College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Select exhibitions include Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Chashama, New York, NY; and International Print Center New York, NY. She is the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, La Napoul Art Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and New York Foundation for the Arts.

IVAN FORDE (b. Guyana, South America; lives and works in New York, NY) received his BA from SUNY Purchase College. Select solo and group exhibitions include the Dumbo Arts Festival & United Photo Industries, Brooklyn, NY; DC Arts Center, Washington, DC; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY, and Smash Box Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Ivan is the recipient of the Lucie Foundation First Place in Fine Art Collage: International Photography Award.

CAMILO GODOY (b. 1989, Bogota, Colombia; lives and works in New York, NY) received his BFA from Parsons The New School for Design, and his BA from Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts. Select group exhibitions include Radiator Gallery, Queens, NY; La MaMa Galleria, New York, NY; and Calumet Gallery, New York, NY. He is the recipient of the Coyne Family Foundation Award by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

AMIR GUBERSTEIN (b.1985, Israel; lives and works in New York, NY) received his BFA and MFA from the Berlin University of Arts. Select group exhibitions include Analog/Precedent Salon, Berlin, Germany; and Universität der Künste, Berlin, Germany. He is a recipient of the Garage Art 2012, Natulis Art Temporary residency, in Berlin, Germany.

KATHERINE TZU-LAN MANN (b. 1983, Madison, WI; lives and works in New York, NY) received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and her BA from Brown University. Select solo and group exhibitions include Grace Teshima Gallery, Paris, France; Gallery nine5, New York, NY; Kashya Hildebrand Gallerie, Zurich, Switzerland; and Project 4 Gallery, Washington, DC. She has been awarded Best in Show at the Rawls Museum, VA, and is the recipient of the Fulbright Grant: Taiwan.

ESPERANZA MAYOBRE (b. 1974, Caracas, Venezuela; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Select solo and group exhibitions include Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY; Centro Cultural La Caja Chacao, Caracas, Venezuela; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY; and The Elizabeth Foundation, New York, NY. She has been awarded the NYU Visiting Artist Program, and the Artist in the Marketplace Fellowship at The Bronx Museum of the Arts.

BUNDITH PHUNSOMBATLERT (b. 1972, Bangkok, Thailand; lives and works in New York, NY) received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and his BFA from Silpakorn University, Thailand. Select solo exhibitions include Flushing Meadows Corona Park/Queens Museum, New York, NY; Location One, New York, NY; and The National Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand. He is the recipient of the New York State Council on the arts Grant’ the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, USA; and is the Grand Prize winner of the Toshiba “Brings Good Things to Life” Art Competition, Thailand.
FELIX PLAZA (b. 1946, Santurce, Puerto Rico; lives and works in New York, NY) received a Fine Art Certificate from New York Phoenix School of Design. Select solo and group exhibitions include Exit Art, New York, NY; 2B Gallery, Budapest, Hungary; Dieu Donne, New York, NY; Brooklyn Public Library, NY; and Donnell Library, NY. He is a former participant of Printline Exchange Residency, Belgrade, Yugoslavia and has work included in many private collections.
DANIEL VASQUEZ (b. 1983, El Salvador; lives and works in New York, NY) received his BA from Rowan University. Select exhibitions include Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, NJ and Studio 1950, New York, NY.

About the Curator
HALLIE RINGLE is the Curatorial Assistant at The Studio Museum in Harlem. She received a BA from UNC Chapel Hill in Art History and History and MA from UT Austin with an emphasis in Contemporary African Art.

INTRO TO SCREENPRINTING

Explore the wide range of techniques in this versatile medium. Silkscreen allows you to easily print hand-drawn, photographic, and digital imagery on paper, fabric, and other surfaces in a variety of colors. You will create handmade and photographic stencils and learn to use a vacuum press and exposure unit to expose screens. Topics will include screen preparation, color separation for multi-screen prints, correct color mixing, registration, screen monoprinting, editioning, and basic methods of printing onto t-shirts. Artists should bring ideas and/or images to the first session.

INTAGLIO

Explore the rich and incredibly diverse possibilities of intaglio printing. This course aims to provide students with a strong command of essential intaglio techniques as well as an overview of historical and contemporary approaches to the medium. We will work through five fundamental intaglio processes: hard and soft ground etching, aquatint, sugarlift, and spitbite. While learning these fundamental techniques, you will develop two or three images and discuss issues in contemporary art with specific emphasis on printmaking. You will work on a copper plate with etching tools, and print on an intaglio press, as well as explore variations of color printing and chine collé.

RELIEF PRINTMAKING

This course will introduce you to various methods of creating woodcut and linocut prints. This direct and versatile process is one of the oldest methods of printing. Learn how to prepare wood and linoleum blocks, carve images by hand, apply ink with rollers, and print by hand and on the press using oil based inks. Also covered will be methods for creating images with multiple blocks and colors, reduction printing, and alternative techniques.

SOLAR PLATE ETCHING
with Mark Herschede
4 weeks, Thursdays, 6-9pm

Fee: $275

Solar plate is the safest and quickest method for creating photographic imagery in etching. Also known as photopolymer etching, this is an easy and innovative way to create intaglio and photo etchings without the use of acid and other harmful chemicals. Hand-drawn, photo-based, or digital images are exposed onto light-sensitive polymer plates, which are developed in water and printed on an etching press.
*This class uses only Akua Water-based non-toxic inks.

COLLAGE / ADHESIVES

This intensive workshop will de-mystify the world of adhesives. We will learn about and how to use traditional and modern adhesives with a focus on selecting the right adhesive for the right material and application. If you are collaging or mounting to paper, wood, metal, or cloth we will personalize and devise a glueing system that works for your practice.

Lower East Side Printshop is pleased to present What Say You? guest curated by Dexter Wimberly. The exhibition will be on view at the Printshop from November 21 – January 26, 2014 with a public reception on Thursday, December 19, from 6-8pm.

What Say You? is an exhibition that explores the potent intersection of politics, technology, and consumerism. The 9 artists featured in What Say You? find inspiration from the modern media landscape - a rich depository of content. In an increasingly globalized world, the distinction between cultures and the meaning of things once perceived clear has become grey. Depending on your perspective, this blurring of the line between our shared human experience and our individual lives may be cause for alarm or celebration… What Say You?

Artist, Rachael Abrams’ Languages speaks to varied forms of communication. In her work each word of a sentence is assigned a color, illustrating how it is a distinct component of the statement. Words are then rearranged, thereby changing the very message delivered. Through her play on words, Abrams explores the cyclical way that communication can facilitate or create an obstacle in knowing people. Megan Berk’s prints are an attempt to capture an imperfect encounter with grace in a domestic setting. Her work acknowledges the complexity of beauty, and the reality that coming face-to-face with those complexities draws us further in, closer to its core. Rebecca Bird’s work deals with traumatic events, such as a car crash, in a detached way. Her printmaking technique imbues otherwise difficult subject matter with subtleness and nostalgia.

Andrew Chan depicts carnival-like scenes with a cast of recurring characters drawn from childhood memories, popular consumer culture, religious iconography, and news headlines. Using a frenetic web of lines and colors strange beings loom and merge in and around their surroundings. Through work based on real and imagined places, artist Gisela Insuaste explores the intersection of architecture, topography, and memory. She explores the physical, emotional and politically charged places we live in, while questioning our individual and shared cultural space and identity.

Raul Martinez mines media detritus as primary source material. Martinez uses junk emails, personal classified ads, sex offender registries, and election campaign mailings to interrogate the ways ideology enters the collective consciousness and the impact of mass media on social relations. Heeseop Yoon’s work deals with memory and perception within cluttered spaces by photographing and then re-interpreting interiors such as basements, workshops, and storage spaces. Her work documents places where everything is jumbled and time becomes ambiguous without the presence of people. Prints by artist, So Yoon Lym are inspired by the Aboriginal stories and visions of creation. Each braided hair pattern is a woven map of the ancient universe, a topographical perspective of the physical world in pattern: valleys, mountains, forests, oceans, rivers, and streams. The braid patterns record journeys to the present, and cartographical longings, a personal record remembering and communicating their pre-historical beginnings. Jennifer Mack’s print, What To Do? expresses the conformities of society that isolate individuals through drawn borderlines. In Musical Rage she depicts how African American woman are exploited to depict malicious characters on reality television and media. Using hand-drawn images and sheet music she documents how media and popular culture flood us with stereotypical or idealistic perceptions. She further investigates the complexities of being a woman, beauty, relationships, body image, power, and personal struggle.

About the Curator
Contemporary art curator and entrepreneur, Dexter Wimberly, was born and raised in Brooklyn. Curatorially, Wimberly focuses on contemporary urban history. “I love art that reflects our times, and I am excited to be in the position to work with artists who are shaping contemporary culture and bringing the beauty of under-exposed aspects of modern life to a greater public. I feel that this is my calling within the arts.” A passionate collector and supporter of the arts, Wimberly has personally exhibited the work of more than 100 individual artists. Dexter Wimberly also maintains a critical dialogue with emerging artists throughout the world by way of exhibitions, public programs, and lectures at galleries and institutions such as Mixed Greens Gallery, Driscoll Babcock Galleries, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Brooklyn Historical Society, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA), The Savannah College of Art and Design, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and The Brooklyn Arts Council.
