Split Pillow, the Chicago-based non-profit film organization, will host this year’s Challenge 3.0 filmmaking competition Memorial Day Weekend. This year's theme is GENRE & AUDIENCE.

Over Memorial Day Weekend teams will write a script for another team, shoot a script written for them, and edit the footage shot by another team, adhering to the basic improvisational rule of “yes, and...” at each stage, taking whatever film segment or script that is given to them and building upon it by layering on their own aesthetic vision in the spirit of Exquisite Corpse.

Prizes will be given at the screening for Best Writing, Best Production,Best Editing, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Audience Choice in the “Competitive” category. An independent judging panel comprised of Chicago’s film community members including representatives from GenArt, the Illinois Film Office, IFP, and the Movieside Film Festival, and others will award prizes.

The Challenge 1.0 was held Memorial Day weekend 2003. 14 original shor films were created and screened at Heaven Gallery in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood. The piece “Recreational Drugs,” a satire on illicit drug use, was selected in 2004 to play at the Movieside Film Festival. Challenge 2.0 was held Memorial Day weekend 2004. 20 original short films were created inspired by songs from 20 Chicago-based bands. The films premiered at the
historic Biograph Theatre in Lincoln Park at a screening co-hosted by online film mavericks Audience-choice winner “Dodging le Draft” went on to win an award for Top Three Shorts at the Salford Film Festival in England.

Founded in 2003, Split Pillow is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development of emerging filmmakers, the production of collaborative motion pictures, and the promotion of media literacy through events, projects and workshops that foster education, appreciation, and artistic innovation.
