Karen Newman has been Curator at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool since October 2010. Here she plans and delivers Open Eye’s artistic programme of exhibitions and events. Prior to Open Eye, Karen was Curator at FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology). With a background in supporting artists’ production development and a specialism in lens-based media, she has commissioned more than 50 artworks by international artists including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Carolee Schneemann, Mark Lewis, Bernie Lubell, Anna Lucas and Sascha Pohflepp. Karen curated Persistence of Vision, a group exhibition exploring the interplay of vision, memory and media with Danish co-curator Andreas Broegger in 2010, which toured to Nikolaj Center for Contemporary Art. She has contributed to various publications including 100 Video Artists (EXIT Press), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Austrian Film Museum) and We are the Real Time Experiment (FACT). She is currently planning Open Eye’s future programme in readiness for their re-launch in a brand new purpose built gallery on Mann Island on the Liverpool Waterfront in 2011.
