Jane D. Marsching is a mixed media artist, utilizing photography, digital imaging, kinetics, and new media to explore the relationships between science, culture, and representation in the last 150 years. She has had one person exhibitions in Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina, and had participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally in the last ten years. In 1999 she received a Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowship in Photography and in 2000 she received an Onandaga Cultural Council grant. She has taught in the Department of Art Media Studies at Syracuse University, Massachusetts College of Art, and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her reviews and criticism have been published in Art Papers, artsMedia, and Art New England. She recently curated an exhibition for the Photographic Resource Center in Boston, MA, Particle Accelerators, on the intersections of science, technology, and photography at the end of the millennium.

Call for Papers: Far Field: Digital Culture, Climate Change, and the Poles

Panel Abstract: Human understanding of the North and South Poles has been radically transformed by innovations in digital and networked technology, particularly in the last decade. The realities of the climate crisis have fueled new technologies in the fields of science, engineering, and art. This panel seeks to explore the transformation of cultural understandings of the unique position and rapidly changing environments of the North and South Poles through digital technology.

Timeline: Abstracts (max 600 words) and a brief bio due by September 15, 2009. Presenters will be notified by October 15, 2009. Final papers due January 15, 2010. Send abstracts and papers to jane@janemarschingcom & andrea@andreapollicom

A picnic on the Boston Common where we will discuss “the Commons” in relation to the work of invited guests, including Iain Kerr, Paul Bartow, Stan Pipkin/spurse and David Bollier of onthecommons.org. Excerpts from Lewis Hyde's upcoming book on the commons will be read.

David Bollier is an activist, author and Editor of OntheCommons.org, the website and blog of the Tomales Bay Institute that explores the commons as a new paradigm of politics, economics and culture. He is the co-founder of Public Knowledge, a Washington public-interest advocacy group that fights reckless extensions of copyright law, and the author of /Silent Theft: The Private Plunder of Our Common Wealth/ (2002), /Brand Name Bullies: The Quest to Own and Control Culture /(2005), and seven other books. Organized by the Center for Art and Visual Culture, The Blur of the Otherworldly: Contemporary Art, Technology, and the Paranormal is a major traveling exhibition featuring twenty eight contemporary artists whose work employs modern communication technologies (photography, film, video, computers, radio, internet, and digital media) to explore culturally inbred questions / superstitions concerning parallel worlds to our own.

Today, the amount of attention devoted to paranormal phenomena such as UFOs, demonic possession, psychics, and ghosts in the media indicates that photography 's early fascinations have not disappeared. Millennial angst, bewildering leaps of science, wildly improbable technological inventions, and ever-decreasing wilderness as human sprawl grows exponentially, makes other worlds once again appear possible, even probable, and definitely alluring. Our escalating desire to prove the existence of another dimension (no matter which one) is linked to photography, with its history of providing us with our proofs. Seduced by the invisible in the face of the medium's relentless and dull dependence upon the physical, photography as a tool of fact (in science), fantasy (in spirit photography), and invention (in the hands of artists) is exploring new frontiers once again.

Blur of the Otherworldly: Contemporary Art, Technology, and the Paranormal will be accompanied by a 200 page fully illustrated catalogue with essays on the significance of paranormal and the supernatural in contemporary culture by Lynne Tillman, associate professor and writer-in-residence at the University at Albany, and Marina Warner, novelist and former scholar at the Getty Center for History of Art and Humanities. Mark Alice Durant and Jane D. Marsching, co-curators of the exhibition, will contribute extensive essays on the interplay between science, art, and the occult as it relates to the artworks in the exhibition. The publication will contain over eighty illustrations in color and black and white as well as a checklist for the exhibition, illustrated timeline, and a bibliography. Sance, a group show of four artists and one collaborative team, will present works that
explore the rich terrain between art, technology, and the paranormal. From the use of photography, ostensibly to document the dead in spirit photographs, through the invention of the telegraph, radio and the introduction of television and computers - new media has consistently been associated with paranormal or spiritual phenomena. The works in this show use new media and traditional media (painting drawing) to look at contemporary phenomena: apparitions of the Virgin Mary, psychics trying to communicate with dead artists, web psychic conversations, ghost voices, etc. Exploring
questions about the nature of belief, doubt, science, and history, this exhibition will be create a phantasmagorical multimedia zone, filling all the senses with images, sounds, experiences that are haunting and otherworldly.

Jane D. Marsching and Deb Todd Wheelers Emmissions from the Ordinary, 2005, explores the nature of perception through fracturing and mirroring one video projection into a hallucinatory field of video fragments. The video images are slow wandering closeup looks at various phenomena: from an apparition of the Virgin Mary in a chemical stain to the original Rohrschach ink blot tests to dirt on a floor. In Instructions for Seeing, 2005, two 5 x 7 LCD screens show a silent film demonstration of various scientific experiments with light, lenses, and photography which are repeatedly interrupted with mysterious events of questionable origin.
