Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to debut a major solo exhibition of new monumental works by artist and emerging talent Jordan Eagles who will cover the entire 3000+ square-foot space with preserved blood in a site-specific installation titled HEMOSAPIEN.

This exhibition is the first public opportunity to view Eagles' largest and most experimental blood works to date—a massive, 30-foot, multi-panel, abstract mural in which animal blood is suspended, encased and fully preserved in plexiglass and resin.

HEMOSAPIEN also features Eagles’ new forays into large-scale projections and color photography. Eagles utilizes overhead classroom projectors to set the entire space aglow in luminous, wall-to-wall projections of “blood light.“ Life-size color photographs of nude models, onto whom he projected blood patterns, serve as documents of his photographic shoots and introduce new figurative elements that emphasize Eagles' fascination with corporeality, mysticism, and physical and intangible spaces. The exhibition is lit to create multidimensional and translucent works that reveal the finite details and textures of the blood as well as the material's uniquely reflective and refractive qualities.

Calling All Artists!
Now accepting applications for Aljira Emerge10
A Strategic Career Management and Exhibition Program for
Emerging Artists

Aljira Emerge is a strategic career management and exhibition program for emerging artists. Artists are taught an approach to strategic career management that challenges the assumptions about working artists that hold all of us back. Under the tutelage of experienced artists and professional coaches—including Colleen Keegan, Ela Troyano, Tracie Morris, Matthew Geller, and Jeffrey Gibson— artists learn how to manage their careers as arts professionals and to develop a personal strategic plan. The program is designed to provide emerging artists with the resources to overcome obstacles, focus on goals, and move forward in their creative careers. Aljira Emerge attempts to address practical areas of concern to artists, such as curatorial practice, legal and financial issues, gallery representation, exhibition and public art opportunities, and marketing. The program culminates with a group exhibition and fully illustrated catalog.

The application process is competitive and the class is limited to 22 artists. The program meets bi-weekly on Saturdays at Aljira in downtown Newark, New Jersey—from April to June.

Spring 2008 Schedule
April 5 (T: Intro) May 31 (PDW)
April19 (PDW)June 14 (PDW)
May 3 (T)June 28 (T)
May 17 (T)

(T= talk, 2-4pm; PDW= Professional Development Workshop, 9:30am-5pm)

Providing a program of this nature and quality for emerging artists is expensive. If accepted to the program, you will be asked to pay only 5% of the estimated cost of this program, or $350, as an investment in your career and a commitment to the program. We welcome all eligible artists to apply—limited, additional need-based financial assistance is available.

The application deadline is Saturday, February 2, 2008 or postmarked by January 26, 2008.
