Purpose:
The University of Maine Innovative Media, Research, and Commercialization Center (IMRC) invites applications for a full-time, soft-money funded, fiscal-year IMRC Project Manager and FAB Technician, effective January 15, 2015. This position will manage and run the operations of the FAB and Prototyping facilities in the new IMRC Center including running and maintaining the equipment and working with students, faculty, and community members on creative and commercialization projects. The selected candidate will be an important member of the IMRC staff with responsibility for assisting the IMRC Director in achieving the mission and goals of the Center. The IMRC Project Manager creates and manages a comprehensive and engaging campus experience for students in Intermedia, New Media, Art and other programs, faculty and staff, as well as associated community members. Additionally, the IMRC Project Manager fosters an environment that supports the academic and personal development of all students in a diverse community. The selected candidate is expected to exercise creativity, to be highly visible, and to be substantially involved in all campus life as it pertains to the functions of the Center. The IMRC Project Manager will be an ambassador for the IMRC Labs, the Intermedia Program, the New Media Department and the University. Typical hiring range for the position is $40,461 - $47,205 commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Project lead on external contracts and work for hire.

Directly supervise IMRC Laboratory students composed primarily of graduate assistants.

Manage the day-to-day operations of physical facilities including machines and spaces.

Oversee the processes and implementation of work flows within the labs.

Ordering and upkeep of laboratory inventories, equipment and resources.

Oversee and manage all operations of the IMRC Fab and Prototyping facilities, including doing all purchasing for the labs.

Manage administrative tasks, including email communication, project oversight, completion of necessary paperwork, etc.

Work with Director and Fiscal Agent of IMRC to keep operational budget in order to maintain budgetary accountability.

Maintain an ongoing inventory of equipment, supplies, and resources.

Recruit and oversee hourly and work-study work for hire at the facilities.

Conduct business relations and work with business fulfilling contractual obligations.

Conduct individual research in areas of expertise related to the labs as well as support research of faculty users.

Collaborate with students, staff members, and faculty to foster an academic community that supports student learning, design thinking, collaborative efforts, or other academic initiatives.

Provide supervision, leadership and mentoring for graduate students. Hold weekly staff meetings and supervision meetings.

Train student staff members, provide ongoing feedback about job performance, provide formal evaluations at least once per year, and support and hold staff members accountable for meeting the expectations of their positions.

Foster safe and secure working environments for students. Implement and enforce policies that: protect the University from liability, support student safety, and follow University and OSHA standards.

Educate students on university policies, safety concerns, and procedures.

Represent IMRC on all needed professional or university committees related to operation of IMRC.

Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.

Build productive working relationships with both internal and external co-workers/colleagues and external contacts/clients to achieve work goals.

Perform special assignments based on IMRC Project Manager's own interests and departmental initiatives.

Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
A minimum of a BA in an arts, design, or engineering production field and relevant professional experience are required.

Experience running or overseeing a working professional shop.

Experience working with clients and contracted projects.

Experience in working in an educational environment and with students.

Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements and their application in a shop environment.

Basic familiarity with CAD/CAM software (AutoDesk, SolidEdge or SolidWorks, Vectric CAM, Sprut CAM), CNC processes, Laser cutting/engraving, 3D printing, and a broad knowledge of shop tools and their use.

Some knowledge of electronics and/or textiles and their use in prototyping design and product development preferred.

Ability to occasionally lift 30-50 pounds.

Ability to travel, normally requiring a valid driver's license.

MFA in Intermedia at the University of Maine

The MFA in Intermedia (http://www.intermediamfa.org/) is not intended to be a traditional art degree even though it has a studio focus. We have chosen the term Intermedia to reflect our aim and intent - that is to work with, and study, creative processes and resulting works which fall conceptually between media that are already known/used as well as between traditional disciplines such as art and computer science. This sense of Intermedia (and by extension our intended program) is directly taken from the art theorist Dick Higgins who is primarily responsible for determining the contemporary use of this term. In 1966 Higgins wrote the following:

For the last ten years or so, artists have changed their media to suit this situation, to the point where the media have broken down in their traditional forms, and have become merely puristic points of reference. The idea has arisen, as if by spontaneous combustion throughout the entire world, that these points are arbitrary and only useful as critical tools, in saying that such-and-such a work is basically musical, but also poetry. This is the intermedial approach, to emphasize the dialectic between the media. A composer is a dead man unless he composes for all the media and for his world.

The three key factors in this are (for the program and the faculty involved):
1. Traditional media distinctions are only reference points not limits for current practice.
2. A key component in current studio practices are intellectual/critical tools, (what we call praxis in our program).
3. The necessity of new forms result from dialectic between media.

Intermedia is an interdisciplinary program committed to hybrid creative research, experimental technological production, as well as development and production in hybrid forms of art such as time-based media, installation, performance art, community-based social art practices, conceptual art, net art, generative art forms (algorithmic art forms) and other new forms that the students may generate from their own intermedial explorations. These new forms are however, not without grounding in, or connections to, traditional art forms in music, writing, performance studies, visual art and others. This reality is highlighted by the situation that none of the New Media faculty have degrees in New Media but their degrees are in other more "traditional areas" (the discipline did not exist when they went through school), including Comparative Literature, Art, Journalism, Engineering, Information Technology, Music, and Art History. Students will be encouraged/required to work with the exceptional resources of the University including (but not limited to) Visual Arts, Music, Creative Writing, Theater, Dance, Cinema, and Comparative Literature, Communications Studies, Computer Science, International Programs, Engineering Technologies and a broad range of programs across the liberal arts and sciences.

Our faculty is interdisciplinary, our aims are interdisciplinary / intermedial - we do not want to recreate the old media-determined approach to studio work but to create something new out of something old. We have listed the resources of the Art Department (in both faculty and facilities) since we will draw on these resources, along with New Media and others, but it is not a traditional art degree. The MFA degree draws on traditional art forms and media but this is as a reference point and a basis for integrative, hybrid work that goes way beyond the limits of such media based categories.

Justice in a More-Than-Human World

What are the possibilities and challenges of collaboration in the anthropocene? Justice in a More-Than-Human World is a series of events exploring various modes of humans working with nonhumans—animals, plants, ecosystems, and technologies. How can humans foster more collaborative (and less exploitative) projects with these nonhuman others?

The series begins Wednesday February 26th, 4-6 pm in the Digital Arts Research Center (DARC) Room 108 with a panel discussion on Human/Nonhuman Collaboration across the Arts & Sciences. This event features visiting artist Amy Youngs and UCSC Emeritus Faculty Helen & Newton Harrison. They will discuss the cross-pollination of art and scientific research in their work, with a focus on human/nonhuman collaboration in the worlds of eco art, bio art and interdisciplinary connections with the biological sciences. Amy Youngs will also host a Wormshare Workshop where she will talk about designing for worms and people and how to connect eco-art ideas to real world, everyday actions, followed by an interactive session where attendees will talk about and design their own Wormshare environments, on Thursday February 27th from noon to 2pm in DARC Room 206.

The series continues Friday February 28th, 4-6 pm in Engineering 2 Room 599 with a panel discussion on Bioengineering and Meat Cultures, featuring visiting scholar and artist Oron Catts. Lab-grown meat is being promoted as a response to the harmful effects of conventional factory-farmed meat production; this event will consider the ethical, environmental, and practical implications of such “custom-built collaborators.”

Sponsors for the event include the UCSC Science and Justice Research Cluster; UCSC Digital Arts and New Media; UCSC Open Lab; and the UC Institute for Research in the Arts.

{Re}HAPPENING is a meeting of creative minds and bodies, drawn to the historic and inspirational site of Black Mountain College’s main campus, known as Lake Eden in Western North Carolina. Once a year, artists come together from various genres and disciplines to cross-pollinate and draw inspiration from these historic grounds. This project has developed from an innovative fundraising and art-based collaboration between the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC) and the Media Arts Project (MAP), balancing the history, tradition and experience of BMCM+AC with the forward thinking and media-based collective of artists that defines the MAP.

The {Re}HAPPENING is part art event, part fundraiser and at its root, a community instigator. All participating artists from years past are invited back, and many of them recruit new artists to join in. Bonds between the artists and the historically rich space are created and strengthened throughout the weekend. New collaborations produce work that expands the ability of each individual, combining talents,strengths and ideas in the tradition of BMC. It is a challenge for artists to balance private time in the studio with public time in collaborative environments. The {Re}HAPPENING provides a context and an event where these two worlds can overlap in wonderfully alluring ways.
