Military Visuality and the Work of Art Symposium

Bringing together a wide array of media theorists and artists, this symposium will explore artistic interventions into the visual culture of militarism.

Speakers and roundtable participants include:

James Bridle is a writer, artist, publisher and technologist based in London, UK. His work covers the intersection of literature, culture and the network. He has written for WIRED, ICON, Domus, Cabinet, the Atlantic.

Mary Beth Heffernan, Associate Professor, Art History and the Visual Arts, Occidental College.

Adam Schrag, Ph. D., Assistant Professor of Communication in Media & Film Studies, Fresno Pacific University.

Alex Rivera is a digital media artist and filmmaker. His work has won multiple awards at the Sundance Film Festival and has been screened at The Berlin International Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, The Getty, Lincoln Center, PBS, Telluride, and other international venues.

Thomas Stubblefield, Ph. D., Associate Professor, Department of Art History, College of Visual & Performing Arts, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Joseph DeLappe is an artist and Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada where he directs the Digital Media program.

Finishing School (with Nadia Afghani and Matt Fisher). Finishing School is a socially-engaged artist collective that explores an expansive range of subject and media territories. Their work, “We Will Show You Fear in a Handful of Dust” ( is currently on view on the college’s Thorne Plaza.
