Borges: The Complete Works / Borges: Obras Completas

Dates:
Thu Dec 13, 2012 18:30 - Fri Dec 14, 2012

Location:
New York, New York
United States of America

Dear Friends,

We invite you to play Borges: The Complete Works and then come down to 3LeggedDog (80 Greenwich St, Manhattan) to see it projected outside.

http://borgeslibrary.com/

"Borges: The Complete Works" is a word-search comprising all the writings from Jorge Luis Borges -- both in his native Spanish and in English translation.

Play circling words in any direction. Saving your game sends it directly to a collective board with all the words circled by everybody.

The English-language board will be projected Thurs, Dec 13, starting at 6:30pm. The Spanish-language board on Fri, Dec 14, also starting at 6:30 (invite attached). They are updated live, so words that are circled during the projection will appear on the building, along with those circled ahead of time.

Hope to see you there!

All best,

Rony Maltz & Daniel Temkin

Daniel Temkin: 98.1034 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Dates:
Fri Oct 05, 2012 19:00 - Sun Oct 28, 2012

Location:
Brooklyn, New York
United States of America

98.1034 Bottles of Beer on the Wall provides drunken encounters with compulsive systems. A program continually preens itself, inserting lines of code to change its visual representation, but along the way, introducing glitches and new patterns of behavior. A therapist program tries to dispense advice as her logic slowly breaks down. Sound editing software turns simple geometric shapes into hallucinatory landscapes. Photoshop generates intricate patterns in an attempt to hide visual compression. A book displays the abuses and absurdities of the DNS system, an addressing apparatus that has seemingly exhausted meaningful combinations of English words.

Daniel Temkin (b. 1973, Boston, MA) lives and works in Queens. He holds an MFA in photography from the International Center of Photography / Bard College. His work focuses on the breakdown of communication and on the inherently broken patterns of thought that distance us from the world. He is currently serving as artist-in-residence at Harvestworks for their one-year New Works residency.

His work is included in Rhizome at the New Museum’s ArtBase collection. Galleries and institutions that have exhibited his work include Devotion, Higher Pictures, American University Museum and Columbia University's Macy Art Gallery. His work has been featured on PBS’s OffBook series and on Fast Company’s Co.Design blog. He has presented at conferences such as Media Art History (Rewire) in Liverpool, GLI.TC/H at School of the Art Institute, the College Art Association’s New Media Caucus at School of the Visual Arts and SlideFest at School of the International Center of Photography.

Daniel Temkin

solo speed show / thesis show for the International Center of Photography/Bard MFA Program in Advanced Photographic Studies

The web is our parking lots, our strip malls, our office parks. On the large scale, it is often banal and commercial, a landscape that reveals and reinforces our compulsive habits. But on the small scale, the plumbing of the web is strange and surprising, something I expose by misusing this underlying technology.

Work in the show was created by Daniel Temkin between 2010 and 2012 and is open source, released under the appropriate Creative Commons or GNU GPL license.
