Artist’s Reception: May 18, 2012, 6pm-9pm
Gala Grand Opening of our New Georgetown Gallery to follow, 9pm-12am.

Bodle creates a new video and sound installation for CoCA based on two previous works, Sewing Sonification (2009) and Waveforms (2010). Both projects use data from ecosystem models along the Washington Coast to create a multimodal experience of art through scientific research. In CoCA’s 4,600 sq. ft. space, a six-channel video installation layers five dimensions of oceanographic data on large semi-transparent textile screens, while a five-channel sonification engages viewers/listeners with references to underlying systems of data.

In the adjoining window gallery, Bodle displays her Sewing Sonifications work, where sound is translated from data, then visualized and made tactile by the artist stitching the sound waves by a computer-to-embroidery machine interface. Also, a video grid of the sewing process captures the rhythm between fabric and thread.

Bodle received her Master’s of Science in Visual Studies from the MIT Visual Arts Program in 2005. Artist residencies and fellowships include Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, IBM Watson Collaborative User Experience Group in Cambridge, MA and 911 Media Arts Center/Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, where she is currently a lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell.

Anetta Mona Chisa was born in Romania. She studied sculpture and conceptual art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, Slovakia (1994-2000) and since 2002 she works as assistant teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, New Media department.

Currently a visiting artist at the 911 New Media Arts Center, she will talk about some of her former projects (video, performances, installations) Most of her works are contextual, based on personal stories and very often she plays with the concept of access to different forms of power: professional, political, ideological, and geographical. Her artistic practices vary from stealing in private art galleries, going to fortune teller to talking about sexy men and doing porn movies and photographs with her often collaborator Lucia Tkacova.

This year she won the Slovak young visual artists award Oskar Cepan and was a resident artist at ISCP New York City. Her works have been showed recently at Milano Flash Art Show, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Vienna, Futura gallery Prague, f.a.i.t. gallery Cracow, Prague Biennial, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien Berlin, Space gallery Bratislava, Turner Contemporary Margate, Museums Quartier Vienna and Billboart Gallery Europe.
