Re: HER.

Geschichten gegenwartiger osteuropaischer Frauen.
In ihrer Installation erforscht
"Uberwachungsperformance".

Mare Tralla (1967) is an Estonian media artist and organiser, who lives
and works in London and Tallinn. Since 1996 her main residency has been
London. In Estonia she is notoriously known as 'Disgusting Girl', a
nickname she received by Estonian media thanks to her activities in
introducing feminist discourses into Estonian contemporary art scene.
In 1995 she was a co-curator of the first Estonian feminist art
exhibition 'est.fem'. Later in 1998 she co-curated Estonian-British
women's art exhibition 'Private Views' and was co-editor of an academic
book 'Private Views. Spaces and Gender in Contemporary Art from Britain
and Estonia'. Her interest into media arts goes back to 1994-95, when
she was a co-author of monthly TV programme 'YesNo' in Estonian state
TV. One of the areas the programe initially focused was interactive
multimedia. At the time she started using video and later Internet in
her works. In her works Mare Tralla uses various media and in her own
words it usuall!
y depends on the idea what she wants to communicate which media she
ends up choosing. The main characteristic of her videos, multimedia
works and installations is ironic and humorous and sometimes
provocative language which she uses to talk about social issues. She
often finds inspiration from her soviet childhood and the current
situation Eastern-European women live in.
In 2000-2003 she was professor of new media at the Estonian Academy of
arts, in 2001 she co-curated new media conference and exhibition
'Interstanding4. End Repeat'. She was a programme chair for ISEA2004 in
Tallinn. Currently she is PhD student at CARTE (Centre for Art
Technology and Education) at University of Westminster in London. Her
research looks at Eastern-European cyberfeminist art practices and how
being part of international mailinglists, such has Faces has shaped
their experiences.
