BIO
I have been a practicing, exhibiting artist since graduating with my MFA from the University of New Mexico in 1980. It was quite a bit easier to find venues for my work earlier in my career than it has been in the last 5-10 years as the political climate in the country has become more conservative. In 1994, along with Andres Serrano and Merry Alpern, I had a $20,000 NEA fellowship recinded by the National Council on the Arts because of the sexual content of the work. I suppose at that time it would have been wise to find subject matter a little less problematic and controversial, but I must admit, it only made me want to dive head first into the abyss. My visual work and writing has always addressed issues of sexuality and gender, and not being one who is intimidated by bullies, my repertoire now includes child sexuality, transsexuality, pornography, and most recently, race and class.
