THE DUMP IS THE MESSAGE :

NOWDAYS WE SEE MORE AND MORE DIGITAL INFORMATION, FROM
TV; TO INTERNET,
TO MOBILES PHONES, TO NAME QUIET FEW. DIGITAL
INFORMATION IS TODAY
EPHEMERAL, THOUSANDS OF KILOBYTES SERVING ONCE AND AT
ONCE TRASHED.
BUT ALL THAT CAN BE RECYCLED. YES, THE TRASH BIN OF
YOUR COMPUTER CAN
BE RECYCLED, AND THAT IS WHAT THE DIGITALRECYCLING
COMPANY CARES ABOUT.
THIS JUNK WILL BE STORED, RECYCLED AND RESUED.
BECAUSE IT IS IMPORTANT TO STEAL THINGS TO UNDERSTAND
THEM BETTER, THIS
PROJECT PROPOSES TO PUT THINGS TOGETHER FOR A COMMON
GOOD. THE POINT IS
NOT TO DENY PRIVACY, BUT TO RETHINK PROPERTY. WHAT
SOMEONE THINKS IS
USELESS FOR HIM CAN BE USEFUL FOR SOMEONE ELSE. BEFORE
TRASHING WHAT

more need indeed - ABC No Rio

Greetings from ABC No Rio. We are writing to enlist
your support in helping us realize our vision for ABC
No Rio as a multi-use community arts center. As we
continue our effort to raise the funds needed to
renovate the site we've already begun making it real.

Secure onn-line contributions can be made through
PayPal at

http://www.abcnorio.org/support/support.html

Our new programs and facilities
enhance our existing activities and are consistent
with ABC No Rio's mission and purpose. The evolution
from storefront gallery and performance space to a
community arts center with three additional floors of
facilities has been exciting and dramatic. The influx
of new volunteers and other participants driving these
efforts amplifies ABC No Rio's vitality.

Our plans for the building place
the ABC No Rio Darkroom in the basement;in the
meantime, we have constructed a smaller, temporary
facility for black and white processing and printing
on one of the upper floors. It is an open and
affordable resource for anyone interested in the
medium of photography, a space for both beginning
photographers and the more experienced to meet, work
and share ideas.

This project really took off
when one of our volunteers received a grant to create
a community-based darkroom and document the process.
Funding to provide classes in photography to
neighborhood youth soon followed. Our educational
initiatives were then given a powerful, institutional
boost:ABC No Rio was chosen to participate in the
Cooper Union's Community Arts Partnership (CAP)
program. We're pioneering an innovative mixed-media
art program for local public high school students that
includes photography,drawing and silk-screen printing.

The ABC No Rio PrintShop is
our silk-screen printing facility. It is used by
artists, activists, bands and others for t-shirts,
posters, patches, fine arts, and other projects.

The PrintShop is a
skills-sharing resource: volunteers are on hand to
assist and teach the printing process. We also help
other community and activist organizations print
posters and t-shirts.

The ABC No Rio Computer Center
is a public resource available to artists, writers,
small press publishers, activists, and the community
at large.
We provide Mac, Windows, and
Linux workstations for word processing, graphics
design, internet access, and new media production. Our
Computer Center is also a forum for skills and
knowledge sharing. We're committed to providing free
and affordable access to technology resources.

The Zine Library at ABC No Rio
includes almost 10,000 items. Our collection consists
of independent, underground, and marginal publications
on subjects such as music, culture, politics, personal
experience, and travel. Our focus is on unique, highly
personalized efforts. This project began in the Spring
of 1998 when we rescued the Blackout Zine Library from
a squat in the South Bronx that was to be evicted.
Since then many individuals have donated their
personal collections, and zine editors and publishers
regularly send us issues. Our collection grows
daily. To date we have raised over $165,000 for our
Building Renovation Fund.
We thank you for your previous
generosity and dedication. But $500,000 is needed.
Your support and participation in this effort remains
important and is appreciated.

With your help we will secure a
permanent home for all ABC No Rio projects and
programs at 156 Rivington Street. Secure onn-line
contributions can be made through PayPal at

CONTEXTIN' ART: NEW E-JOURNAL FROM ACM

PRESS RELEASE
IT'S P.E. TIME WITH CONTEXTIN' ART - A NEW FORUM FOR
EXPLORING THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF NEW MEDIA ART
THROUGH ART
Contact: artofficial construction media (ACM)
Contextin' Art is a mini-portal for the exploration of
the context of art. The economic, political and social
forces shaping the histories of art are visualized as
artworks themselves. With "Contextin' Art", visitors
can visually browse the often invisible relationships
between art, electoral politics, and economic
philanthropy.
Contextin' takes cues from previous generations of
artists engaged in "institutional critique" and
"conceptual art," as well as calls from contemporary
artivists to interrogate the desire for
"techno-formalism" within institutions.
Contextin' Art will function as a rhetorical e-journal
of sorts, soliciting and archiving web-based art works
and texts that address its mission. New "issues" will
be published quarterly, hosted from the ACM web site.
The Spring 2003 issue will launch in April, and we are
accepting artworks and text through March.

the same time a document of barbarism." Walter

ACM is an open ended collaborative project with
interests in the intersections of politics, economics,
activism, and technology within what is usually called
culture. Current members are: ryan griffis, Mark
Cooley, + others remaining anonymous.

InterActivist Network new media workshops 1.6.03

Deadline:
Tue Dec 10, 2002 01:00

ABC No Rio's InterActivist Network is beginning
another course of
training in new media technology.

The InterActivist Network provides training in new
media
technologies, and through this training develops
content for the
InterActivist website ( http://www.interactivist.net
).

The proliferation of web-based media has resulted in a
need to
provide artists and community and media activists with
new skills and
knowledge. The InterActivist Network is a training
program that seeks
to provide education in new digital technologies
through the
development of a web-site addressing local issues that
have national
or international implications.

Use of the internet by artists and activists has
exploded, yet for
many the technology remains mystifying. This program's
training
regimen includes overview presentations, workshops,
and hands-on
experience through developing and producing content
for the
InterActivist site. The year 2002 program runs from
mid-April through
November. The following subjects are covered: HTML and
Web-Site
Design; Shooting Video; Digital Video Editing; Digital
Video Formats
and Video Compression; Digital Audio; Server Set-Up
and Maintenance;
and Relational Databases and Media Management.

Participants are expected to have grounding and
expertise in at least
one of the following areas: video production and/or
post-production;
web-site design or associated graphic design
applications; network
and client/server technologies; or ENG or print
journalism. A high
degree of skills-sharing occurs among the participants
in this
project, complementing the training provided by
experts in the
relevant technologies.

We meet weekly for two to three hour sessions every
Sunday at 2:30pm;
additional work sessions occur at times throughout the
week. The next
course of training will begin on SUNDAY JANUARY 6,
2003.

update 12.02.02

acm has recently added the debut of a new VAC-UP
(virtual aesthetic curriculum user program) program
called "contextin' art," as well as new documentation
of the "Sexy or Sexism?" media project, to the home
page. past projects have been archived in the projects
section.

Contextin' Art is a new, ongoing database of artworks
that attempt to make visual connections between the
superstructure of Art, especially "New Media Art," and
their economic/political infrastructure. The first
installments re-visualize the Walker's "New Media
Initiatives" and the Whitney (including the ArtPort).
This is just one small effort to visualize economic
authoritarianism where it is often least visible. ACM
welcomes suggestions and submissions of artworks for
the Contextin' Art database.
