Knox Gallery in Central Harlem offers a dynamic program of exhibitions and encounters this April with a one person exhibition entitled “Mirrors of the Soul, portraits by Harlem sculptor Leah Poller”. The showpiece of the exhibition is a portrait of Fred Ho legendary jazz composer, internationally renowned baritone saxophonist, composer, arranger, band-leader, writer, producer and political activist. Poller’s unique approach to the bronze portrait is an amalgam of figurative, and non-figurative, real and sur-real, portraying both the subject and his/her thoughts. The over-arching result as presented in “Mirrors of the Soul” is a series of sensitive and powerful portraits that emanate from a unique subject while expressing the universal.

Expressions is an exhibition curated by and displaying the work of interns at Art in FLUX Harlem: Daniella Carter, Dykeisha Hill, Elina Stella, Erin Murphy, Jacqueline Jones, Kachine Moore, Kathy Veliz, Ken Weisensee, Marie Demple, Raven Willis, and Rebecca Alvarez. Each artist contributes an image with the central focus of expression. When joined together the images create an introduction to the vast ever-changing forms of human emotion.

Focusing on the portrait by way of painting and photography, the exhibit gives light to the variances of expression through the eye of different individuals. The artists have based their work for this exhibition on the idea of capturing and embodying human emotion. The show emphasizes the effect of expression and how it can influence someone’s initial perception of another individual. Whether it is read from a smile, eyes, pose, or through a gut feeling, expression is an innate form of communication. Through drawing, painting, collage and photography the interns collaborated to present their own lens to convey the emotional state of an individual.

DISCOVERY (Gallery Exhibit)
Three artists from Harlem on a path to discovering self - each looking outwardly at their surroundings and at the same time evaluating their place in the world. The union of these three artists creates a distorted and curious view of the world. Their works as a group are brought to life with the juxtaposition of dissimilar aspects. Each found object in Suprina’s pieces is an abstracted view of humanity. Ivan introduces thought provoking questions and intense emotions through distorted images of himself. Makeba sees herself through the faces of others and celebrates the influence of other extraordinary young artists.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES (Gallery Exhibit)
The search for truth can result in obsessive leaps of inventiveness. Reaching near ecstatic levels through repetition and pattern in their studio practice, the artists in Speaking in Tongues present their ideas through a wide range of subject and media.
Influenced by minimalist music and abstraction, and raised through an age of technological communication and reproduction that has advanced at warp speed, the works here demonstrate the artists’ facility with pluralism and the desire for expressing the contemporary culture. Some artists pull back into quiet areas to contemplate their inner voice. Others dive in and reflect upon this pulse of constant energy. Speaking in Tongues presents seven artists who use an invented, coded language to reveal their concepts in visual and performance art.

ART ENOLOGY (Gallery Exhibit)
e·nol·o·gy also oe·nol·o·gy (-nl-j) n. In Art Enology artists draw from this history to transform wine bottles into visual artistic statements that simultaneously advance the aesthetic properties and possibilities of bottles; inspire a dialogue centered on historical and contemporary themes and concepts; and manifest environmental consciousness through the act of repurposing everyday material. These mixed medium works integrate wine bottles with a variety of predominantly found objects, photography, new media, performance art and more to intoxicate the creative palate.
