BIO
Mission
DownStreet Art is a public art project designed to revitalize downtown North Adams. By harnessing existing art organizations and events and transforming vacant and open spaces into art destinations, DownStreet Art defines North Adams as a cultural haven, driving tourists and community members.

What we do
Each summer from late June till mid October, DSA creates a wide program of visual and performing art events, including exhibitions, video screenings and site-specific installations in downtown North Adams. A post-industrial city in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, North Adams began its cultural revitalization with the opening of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in 1999.
The last Thursdays of each month all DownStreet Art galleries and the venues stay open late along with stores, restaurants and businesses with specials.

Why we do it
Our goal is to help the economic development of North Adams and encourage the dialogue between our community and the arts.
Since its inception in 2008, over 50,000 visitors came downtown and through the doors of DownStreet Art’s galleries and exhibits.

Who is involved in the project
DownStreet Art is a program of MCLA’s Berkshire Cultural Resource Center (BCRC) a non-profit organization that provides professional development training, resources, and support to the artists, art managers, and creative workers of Berkshire County run by the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, MA.
Founding partners are the City of North Adams, Massachusetts Cultural Council and MASS MoCA.
Leader financial sponsors are Greylock Federal Credit Union and Investiment Group.

DEADLINE APRIL 15, 2013

DownStreet Art’s call for artists and curators returns! Exhibition projects should reflect the theme of “BEYOND INDUSTRY”. DownStreet Art 2013 invites all artists of all mediums and disciplines to submit work that explores the realms beyond industry; the art industry, the industry of the factory town in which DownStreet Art lives, as well as the industrial structures that have formed our time and place. All interpretations of this theme are welcomed and encouraged.

DownStreet Art is a great opportunity to have your work/project showcased in an art-friendly community, to be in touch with artists, curators, and professionals in the art world, and to be part of a larger discourse about contemporary art. Opportunities are many, so please read details carefully and fill the application accordingly to your needs. DownStreet Art welcomes any form of art and any art work collectives. If you are a duo/trio or a group of artists wanting to exhibit together please apply!

DownStreet Art 2013 will run from June 20TH till October 31ST. It will begin with a kick-off celebration on June 20TH – the weekend of WILCO’s Solid Sound Festival at MASS MoCA- and will hold five “DownStreet Art Thursdays” (with all galleries hosting opening receptions and downtown performances each last Thursday of the month from June through October [except in June – i.e. third Thursday]: June 20, July 25, August 29, September 26, October 31).

Please note that as a public art project, DownStreet Art is dependent on available/empty spaces, sufficient funding and adequate staffing. While we are planning for 2013, the number of available/empty spaces (and thus opportunities) is uncertain at this time. What we do know is that, due to the success of DownStreet Art in attracting permanent tenants for empty storefronts, for 2013 we will be working with fewer stores downtown.
