Location:

Closing July 23rd, 7pm—late
Viewing July 18th—22nd, 12—6pm

We are pleased to announce a new exhibition entitled Problematic, curated by artist Sessa Englund.

The exhibition demonstrates work that engages with art’s most paradoxical natures and will include works by members of the Con Artist Collective:Laura Tack, Ko Irkt, Michael Sharp, Miranda Nichols, Olivia Fox, Charles Allen, Chris Simon, Cody Oyama, Saroj Patel, Matsumoto Sanpo, Natania Frydman, Shaina Yang and Eric Steginsky.

Art inhabits a space in-between subjects: It embodies a reflection of the past and a creation of the future, a movement towards order and disorder within its own entity. Using this subject as a starting point, this exhibition deals primarily in the way in which contradiction and conflict within the artist can become inspirational to his/her path toward art-making that is investiga- tional, divisive and explorational.

The fifteen invited artists were asked to center their process on three contradictions which they perceive to be inherent in the contemporary practice of art: art as rejuvenator and self-destruc- tor, art as both dependent and independent upon consumerism, and art as both a heightening and an obfuscating agent in our attempt to perceive reality. The resultant exhibition displays a variety of work all speaking to the individual artists’ struggle with the common paradoxes of the artistic practice.
Sessa Englund is a multi dimensional artists living in Brooklyn. Solo shows include the upcoming “Incomplete Response”, 119 Ludlow, NYC, “Solo Solo-Solo”, Roten 2, Gothenburg, “You Missed It”, Grace Exhibition Space, “Flowers of Habit”, School of Art+Design, Purchase.

Social documentary photographers, Anna Fawcus and Giles Clarke, come together for a joint exhibition at Con Artist Gallery. Two different stories from across the world unite to celebrate the strength and determination of humanity.

Anna Fawcus presents a series of work called Children and the Art of Eight Limbs, documenting the lives of a group of young Muay Thai boxers in Thailand. The images explore the reality of life as a child boxer, both in and outside of the boxing ring.

Giles Clarke presents a selection of recent images from Haiti, a country living in the shadow of a devastating earthquake. As a consummate documentary photographer, his images emerge from a deep commitment to social justice.

Balance is lost. The hand of man seeks to restore it.
During the act of creation, the swan dives into the unknown, risking beauty and capturing the spirit. This dive is eternal, a ritual as old as humankind.
All the artists presented share the same quest ; crossing genres and mediums, reaching back to the roots of humanity in order to explore the vast land of the collective mind.
The artists highlight that which already exists,
has always been, and will remain.

In the words of T.S. Elliot:
"We should never cease from exploring
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time..."

To Need Another

Dates:
Wed Dec 19, 2012 20:00 - Wed Jan 02, 2013

Location:
New York, New York
United States of America

Coming up on December 19th, one of our members Audrey Ryan is showing her
works of art. There will be an opening reception on from 8pm-12 am. More
details about her show are listed below, hope you all can make it or tell
your friends.

"I've been f***in the world and I ain't come yet." (Dwayne Michael Carter
Jr.)

To Need Another is a show about dependence. It's about how, what, or who we
fill our voids with.
To Need Another is about genuinely needing someone, something or some way.
It's about substance, excess, and money in the bank.
It's also about living fast, dying young, sex, drugs and rock and roll.
But mostly it's about sex.
Because for that to be any good, you really do Need Another.
