What Happened to Fashion?

Dates:
Wed Feb 18, 2015 19:00 - Sat Feb 28, 2015

Location:
New York, New York
United States of America

Fashion is a product of industry, utility, and trend. Clothing is built to dress according to the wearers needs and taste. Decades of fashion have been handcrafted by repurposing old styles and borrowing from the visual world, but more and more the ideal of fashion is one of non-industry.

Curators Lady Millard and Christopher Tandy ask "What happened to Fashion?" in the next show at the Con Artist Collective. "Fast Fashion" has made the design process into a function of haste. Branding is becoming more important than the clothing itself and designers are now seated behind computers to facilitate a non-industry of speed and image over style.

Where is fashion in this new world of memes and "nice" Instagram photography? Has fashion become a lost art?

LilKool x Kristine Guico

Dates:
Fri Feb 13, 2015 19:00 - Fri Feb 13, 2015

Location:
New York, New York
United States of America

Hi Rhizome,

We here at the Con Artist Collective would like to invite you to "LilKool x Kristine Guico", a collaborative art and fashion show coinciding with the upcoming New York Fashion Week. Pop artist LilKool and womenswear designer Kristine Guico will combine forces to create unique outfits that will be modeled on the runway in our gallery space.

LilKool is a Brooklyn based artist who is proud to be part cowboy, part gentleman. His brightly colored, cartoonish designs cover canvases, high-end designer clothing, stickers, and tumblr pages with heavily outlined, grotesque characters. Up-and-coming designer Kristine Guico's clothing continues to pop up in magazines and celebrity wardrobes. Her geometric patterns and bold lines make the perfect compliment to LilKool’s aesthetic.

Clothing and artworks will be available for sale. Join us after the show for drinks and a chance to meet some of New York's most active emerging artists.

Date: Friday, February 13th
At: Con Artist Ludlow Gallery, 119 Ludlow St. NY 10002
Tel: 646-504-2323

02.13.15 Friday 7 to 11 /// Opening and Fashion Show

We're joining forces with Brooklyn's Create Collect to produce "Festina Lente", our five day festival of art and performance. This marks Con Artist's second annual foray into the tropics in the name of Art Basel. We're looking to double the success of last year with a private gallery space in the heart of Wynwood and a line up of cocktail parties, DJs, movie screenings, and a collaborative mural that will grow throughout the event with contributions by artists and guests.

Make us a stop on your Art Basel tour this year. "Festina Lente" will be held in our gallery space at 116 NW 26th Street.

Action Figures: Objectified

Dates:
Tue Nov 25, 2014 19:00 - Sat Dec 06, 2014

Location:
New York , New York
United States of America

“Action Figures: Objectified” showcases a special niche of artists who create sculptures inspired by the toy industry. These artists blend pop culture kingpins, ‘80s cartoon superheroes, low budget anime, and happy meal freebies into unique, ultra-cool handmade sculptural objects. Often these sculptures are cast and packaged to reference the toys you loved as a kid in a totally new context.

As we anticipate a large attendance for this show, Con Artist will host an invite-only opening on Wednesday, November 26th that permits an early viewing of the artwork. We will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday and re-opening Black Friday with another chance to view all the awesome, toy-inspired pieces (a great opportunity to find unique holiday gifts).

American Identity 1.0

Dates:
Wed Oct 29, 2014 19:00 - Wed Oct 29, 2014

Location:
New York , New York
United States of America

What does an American look like? It depends on who you ask. The Con Artist Collective shares its take on this nation’s populace with “American Identity 1.0”, a collection of portraits of American people. These portraits range from the traditional to the avant-garde and each gives a small slice of contemporary American humanity. They explore the schism between a white-washed history portrayed by the media and the reality of defining yourself in a national culture.

It’s strangely appropriate that the show is curated by a foreigner. Gonzalo Sepulveda was born in Chile, but has a long love affair with the United States where he has lived for more than a decade. “American Identity 1.0” presents a critical view of the American experience from an outsider’s perspective.
