3rd Ward
Since 2008
Works in Brooklyn

BIO
Our Mission is...

To address the needs of contemporary artists and creatives by providing an affordable, high-end, multi-disciplinary, open source facility where creative professionals can pursue their careers and projects while building a lasting art community in Brooklyn.
Our Story

Founders Jason Goodman and Jeremy Lovitt moved to New York City in 2004. They were immediately faced with the limitations of being a working artist; either you work at home and don't have the space and tools you need, or you sacrifice creative freedom and work for someone else.

Their solution: 3rd Ward. In September 2005, they took over this 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse space in the third ward of Brooklyn. Friends and local artists put their blood, sweat and a whole lotta love into getting the facility open by May of 2006.
Today

3rd Ward is a member-based artists' co-op. Our facility houses two gorgeous photo studios, a professional wood and metal shop, a fully loaded digital media lab, an art gallery, shared office space and a multi-disciplinary continuing art education program. It can be used for private rentals, on a per-project basis, for group work, and more.

On a typical day, there is: a fashion shoot in the photo studio; a few people from the neighborhood are checking out our latest gallery show; our media lab is full of people using the design and editing software; the wood & metal shops are crawling with artisans working on sets for plays, building furniture, creating sculptures, and designing jewelry; and our offices are lined with designers and creative professionals working on different projects. Everyday is a whirlwind of creative people and energy!

3rd Ward proves that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have the best resources and equipment at your fingertips.

##1## JUNE 2008 CLASSES ####

After a 4 month hiatus, screen printing is back. We'd like to welcome our
new screen printing instructor Philip Sachs. Phil has been teaching screen
printing over at Etsy labs for the last bit, and we're really excited to
have him join the 3rd Ward team. Check out his screen printing class here:

*Screen Printing Intensive - Phil Sachs
Sunday June 22th * 1p-6p * $135 M / $170 NM
http://www.3rdward.com/classes/june/diy

Screen Printing is a simple and effective way to produce an unlimited number
of virtually identical prints onto practically any surface. A screen fabric
is stretched tightly onto a wooden frame and is coated with a photosensitive
material. Part of the screen is then blocked with a stencil and is exposed
through a photo process leaving your image on the screen. When ink is
deposited onto the screen, it is pushed through with a squeegee leaving the
image on the printing surface which may be fabric, paper, glass, wood, or
just about anything.

In this class you will learn all of the steps involved in the screen
printing process from design conception to the finished product. No prior
knowledge is required, however students are encouraged to prepare their
designs on a computer program like Photoshop and basic knowledge of similar
programs and access to a computer is helpful.

##3## WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE OF THE MONTH ####

Brownian Motion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_motion

Brownian Motion (named in honor of the botanist Robert Brown) is the random
movement of particles suspended in a liquid or gas or the mathematical model
used to describe such random movements, often called a particle theory.

The mathematical model of Brownian motion has several real-world
applications. An often quoted example is stock market fluctuations. Another
example is the evolution of physical characteristics in the fossil
record.

Brownian motion is among the simplest continuous-time stochastic processes,
and it is a limit of both simpler and more complicated stochastic processes
(see random walk and Donsker's theorem). This universality is closely
related to the universality of the normal distribution. In both cases, it is
often mathematical convenience rather than the accuracy of the models that
motivates their use.
