Live Video Manipulation and 3D Graphics in Max MSP Jitter

Deadline:
Sun Jul 20, 2014 11:00

Location:
Brooklyn, New York
United States of America

Live Visuals for Performance and Installation: A Workshop in GPU Accelerated Graphics within Max MSP Jitter.

In this two part 6-hour workshop we will explore the OpenGL framework within Max MSP Jitter to create custom software for Live Visuals in Performance and Installation. We will look to Blender (a free and open source 3D modeling software, www.blender.org) to build our own 3D object models and create wholly unique navigable worlds in Jitter. Participants will leave equipped with an understanding of GPU accelerated video manipulation and a trove of tools and reusable code to create their own Custom Interactive Video Software.

This workshop will be geared towards beginners but will dive right into 3D and OpenGL concepts in Jitter, therefore even seasoned but patient Max users may benefit from the course. Ableton Live users wishing to learn more about sound responsive Visuals in Max are also invited to participate.Using a series of pre-made examples and reusable code we will discuss the following practices in Max MSP Jitter for Interactive Installation and Live Visual Performance:

• Importing your own Media to the World Space - Sound/Video/Still Image

• Video Mixing

• Utilizing Shader Programs for high performance video effects

• Basic 3D modeling and sculpting techniques in Blender

• Creating Real-Life Spatial Attributes for 3D Objects– Physics/Light/Texture/Material

• Manipulating Models and Media in Real-time - Spin/Move/Warp/Destroy

• Have your program react to Sound

• Video Mapping

• Technical Walk-Through for Installation and Performance Setup

• Controllers and Camera Sensors (Midi, Webcam)

• Building A Sleek User Interface for your Software

Participants should bring their own Mac laptops (OSX Snow Leopard or later). Interested Windows users should get in touch before signing up. Depending on what Mac generation you are using, for modeling purposes, it may be necessary to obtain a mouse with a scroll wheel.

A free 30-day trial of Max/MSP Jitter is available here http://cycling74.com/downloads/ – A full version of Blender is available here for free (http://www.blender.org/download/).

*Software should be downloaded and installed prior to workshop date.

(Please note that you must provide your own computers, if you have any questions about workshop or materials email: thomasjohnmartinez@gmail.com)

Online Workshop: Intro To Max MSP Jitter

Deadline:
Wed Jun 25, 2014 00:00

Participants in this –virtual– 2-week workshop will be introduced to the mystic and inspiring world of our favorite art coding software: Max/MSP/Jitter. Lessons will be administered through a series of pre-recorded video tutorials which students will be able to download and keep for future reference. The Instructor – Thomas Martinez – will also be available during the two weeks to answer questions and help guide personal projects.

This course is perfect for artists working with sound or video who are interested in contemporary (and futuristic?) ways of digital media manipulation. Ableton Live 8/9 users interested in how Max can be used for interactive musical experiences and audio-responsive visuals are also welcome to sign up. The goal of this workshop is to give you a solid foundation in Max and the tools to become the next new media art star.

Import a sound or video sample and abstract it beyond recognition – or why not use it to influence the rotation of a 3D object? Use live camera feeds to track moving bodies in a space and turn it into something audible, and musical. How can we harness external forces such as the natural sound environment or even plane old midi data to change parameters and make a completely new and unique audio/visual instrument? For two weeks, these topics and more are our springboard.

If you do not own Max already, is is available for a free 30 – Day trial from cycling74.com/downloads

EVENT

Drawing the Third Dimension: Approaches to 3D Video in Max/MSP/Jitter + 3D Printing

Dates:
Sun Feb 23, 2014 11:00 - Sun Mar 02, 2014

Location:
New York City, New York
United States of America

In this two-day workshop we will explore MaxMSP Jitter’s OpenGL framework as a
tool for 3D video production. We will also use Blender (a free and open source 3D
modeling software) to sculpt our own object models and work with them further in
Jitter. Participants will leave equipped with an understanding of video manipulation
using OpenGL and a trove of tools and re-usable code to create their own Navigable
3D Environments or Custom Video Software. Interested members will also have
the option of “printing” a model of their own creation (using the Pioneer Works
Makerbot) for a small additional materials fee.
This workshop will be geared towards beginners but will dive right into 3D
concepts in Jitter, therefore even seasoned but patient Max users may benefit from
the course.
Using a series of pre-made examples and re-usable code we will discuss the
following practices in MaxMSP Jitter:
• Creating Real-Life Spatial Attributes for 3D Environments – Physics/Light/Texture/Material
• Importing Our Own Pre-Existing Media to the World Space - Sound/Video/
Still Image
• Importing Object Models from Popular 3D Animation Software to the World
Space - Blender/Maya/Autocad
• Manipulating Models and Media in Real-time - Spin/Move/Warp/Destroy
• Methods of 3D Modeling in Blender - Sculpt/Mold/Export (OBJ/DAE)
• Preparing 3D Models for 3D Printing and 3D printing using the Makerbot
We will also be touching on some more traditional methods in video such as mixing
techniques and applying visual effects.
Participants should bring their own Mac laptops (OSX Snow Leopard or later).
Interested Windows users should get in touch before signing up. Depending on what
Mac generation you are using, for modeling purposes, it may be necessary to obtain
a mouse with a scroll wheel.
A free 30-day trial of Max/MSP Jitter is available here http://cycling74.com/
