TAG is a performance/media artist who was raised in St. Louis, Missouri and currently residing in Baltimore, MD. With a background in video (he worked for a television station before graduate school) and disc jockeying, he combines the two worlds into performance art, using record players with special vinyl records as control devices for projected video. A computer connected to the turntables allows him to manipulate, mix, and affect clips from appropriated videos (taken from newscasts in various cities) to re-contextualize them. He notes, “Most VJ’s (video jockeys) just sit at a folding table and click a mouse during their shows…” as far as the audience knows they might be checking their email. TAG wants to challenge this aspect of VJ culture by bringing to it the performative nature of DJ culture.
