Joseph DeLappe is a media artist and educator. Working with electronic and new media since 1983, his work in online gaming performance, installation and sculpture have been shown throughout the United States and abroad. His work engages politics, war, work, play, protest and human/machine relations. Much of his work over the past decade involves taking creative agency in online shooter games and virtual communities. The intent is to create works that are formally and aesthetically engaging while conceptually connecting with the everyday; to reify the ordinary into the extraordinary; to intervene in social and political realities, both real and virtual.

His works have been exhibited throughout the world. Projects have been written about and/or he was interviewed in the following media contexts: , , The New York Times , CNN domestic and international, NPR (National Public Radio), CBC (Canadian Broadcast Company), and The Sydney Morning Herald . He is a native of San Francisco and has resided in Reno, with his wife and twin daughters since 1993.

The Digital Media Studio of the Department of Art of the University of Nevada, Reno seeks applicants for a .53 (half-time with full benefits) staff support person. This position works in support of the research and educational programs through the Digital Media Studio at UNR.

The Position
Information Technology (IT) Technicians install, configure, monitor, and maintain networks and monitor and maintain help desk user support or mainframe and server operations.

****** This is a part-time position at 53% in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada Reno, and is located in Reno, NV. This position will be responsible for the maintenance and monitoring of all equipment related to teaching and research in the Digital Media Studio, Department of Art, including: the LAN, all software, desktop systems, networking, laser and inkjet printers, scanners, digital video cameras, digital photographic cameras, data projectors, & audio systems. Other duties will include: maintaining and facilitating electronic key code access system for Media Laboratories; purchasing and upkeep of all inventory necessary for the daily operation of the labs; maintaining, developing and updating the Department of Art website as needed; and recruiting, training and supervising student workers.

****** The position will work Monday - Friday about 21 hrs a week, and will have a variable work schedule, depending on the needs of the faculty and students. There are benefits afforded this position. Per NV State Legislature, State of Nevada Classified employees are subject to a mandatory unpaid furlough requirement of one day per month (part-time prorated) through June 30, 2011. To Qualify

Education and Experience
1)Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of IT work experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of network workstation hardware and software; OR one year of relevant experience as an IT Technician IV in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

1)As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks.

Special Requirements

1)Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required.
2)A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.

Additional Position Experience
1)This position requires two years of IT work experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of network operating systems/work group operating systems.
2)Requires experience diagnosing and repairing hardware problems, and upgrading hardware.
3)Requires experience diagnosing and repairing software problems, installing software updates or installing and testing new software.
4)Requires working knowledge of Macintosh-based graphic, web, video and audio processing applications: installation, maintenance, configuration, etc.
5)Requires knowledge and experience in the field of experimental digital art research and education.
6)Abilities with interactive processing and/or game design a plus.

The Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery ( presents an exhibition and symposium highlighting the project. is an online project launched in 2007 by media artist/activist Joseph DeLappe. This ongoing project invites artists and architects to propose memorials to commemorate the untold thousands ofcivilian deaths in the war in Iraq.

A total of 174 proposals are featured on the website ( which is available in both English and Arabic translations. An international slate of curators, scholars, artists and architects were invited in 2008 and 2009 respectively, each to select their top ten entries (there is no "winner" of this competition). The Sheppard Gallery exhibition features 59 of these proposals that were selected through the two jurors' review processes. Selected artists were invited to recreate their online proposals as 30x40" vertical layouts that have been realized as large format prints for the exhibition. The exhibition features selected artifacts and videos related individual works. In the center of the space, computer stations will be available for visitors to view the entirety of the project online. A gallery walk-through and symposium featuring artists, jurors and scholars involved with the project is scheduled for March 4th, 2010, followed by an evening reception.

Announcing: gg hootenanny: gandhi's release party and global gaming singalong!

Call for Participation!

Media Artist Joseph DeLappe presents the first ever internet-wide global gaming voicechat singalong, the "gg hootenanny!", a day long festival featuring songs of freedom and protest in celebration of the release of his avatar, MGandhi Chakrabarti, from his nine-month imprisonment/durational reenactment in Second Life. This is a call for participation for all gamers and residents of online communities to come together and sing!

There are several opportunities for participation:

1) Join MGandhi Chakrabarti in Second Life on Odyssey Art and Performance Island at 6pm SLT (Pacific daylight) on January 26th, for the "gg hootenanny", a voice chat concert of songs of freedom and protest. Special appearance by Second Front! Here is the SLURL for the event: (do feel free to visit Gandhi in the meantime, he is there 24/7!). If you plan on participating in the concert, please contact me and let me know! I am looking for avatar/participants as famous musicians, movie stars, politicians, etc. Or join us at the Digital Media Studio of the University of Nevada, Reno on January 26th at 6pm, bring your instruments and/or voices and come prepared to play!


2) Log on to your favorite online game or community any time on January 26th and sing songs of freedom and protest! Solo and group performances are encouraged! A list of recommended songs will be posted soon on the event blog! Please video document your performance! Post your videos to youtube or vimeo and I will embed your videos on the blog for this project.
