“Members Only” Con Artist Collective Group Show
AT: Superchief Gallery at CultureFix

Con Artist is pleased to announce its unveiling of the group exhibition, Members Only at CultureFix. The show features artists from the Con Artist collective under the curatorial theme of the self nude, and drawing inspiration from the exhibition style of the Academic Salons of 1800’s France. Whether they chose to flaunt what they got, or leave more to the imagination, the members invite you into a private show. This will undoubtedly be one of this summer’s most stark, genuine, and uncomfortably honest exhibitions. The nude is a trope figure in art history, acting as subject and metaphor. For whatever reason we do this: necessity, narcissism, a quest for deeper understanding, even boredom...The results are sure to be telling. We Con Artists stand here in the buff, but stand for so much more.

Con Artist is a collective of over 100 artists based out of the Lower East Side, founded by Brian Shevlin. Con Artist is a Gallery upstairs, shared workspace below. Their mission is to promote emerging artists, providing a space and community for growth and exploration in the arts. Members Only was organized by artist Sessa Englund.

Exploring the intersection between the two artists, ANIMALIA seeks to touch on the imaginations unknown across boundaries in the unconscious realm of white lines and black. Proportionless figures fight with the constraint of the blank page. Growing up in the mind of colorful chaos, playful figures and dark dreams fight, play, and fuck their way through life. Playing make- believe with old world souls and new world behaviors, we become our own gods...creating the world through the lens of a baby snail.

Sessa Englund sure can appreciate a good problem.
She’s a multimedia artist and some kinda subversive. In this solo show,
she explores how internal conflicts and contradictions shape the
artistic process. Englund undercuts ideals that supposedly dictate an art’s
worth, hijacks commodities and reappropriates them for both personal and
political commentary, & attacks the prevailing attitudes which celebrate
commercialism rather than social and artistic integrity.
And she might manipulate your preconceived notions about femininity and beauty.
Careful.

We are pleased to announce a new exhibition entitled Problematic, curated by artist Sessa Englund.

The exhibition demonstrates work that engages with art’s most paradoxical natures and will include works by members of the Con Artist Collective:Laura Tack, Ko Irkt, Michael Sharp, Miranda Nichols, Olivia Fox, Charles Allen, Chris Simon, Cody Oyama, Saroj Patel, Matsumoto Sanpo, Natania Frydman, Shaina Yang and Eric Steginsky.

Art inhabits a space in-between subjects: It embodies a reflection of the past and a creation of the future, a movement towards order and disorder within its own entity. Using this subject as a starting point, this exhibition deals primarily in the way in which contradiction and conflict within the artist can become inspirational to his/her path toward art-making that is investiga- tional, divisive and explorational.

The fifteen invited artists were asked to center their process on three contradictions which they perceive to be inherent in the contemporary practice of art: art as rejuvenator and self-destruc- tor, art as both dependent and independent upon consumerism, and art as both a heightening and an obfuscating agent in our attempt to perceive reality. The resultant exhibition displays a variety of work all speaking to the individual artists’ struggle with the common paradoxes of the artistic practice.
Sessa Englund is a multi dimensional artists living in Brooklyn. Solo shows include the upcoming “Incomplete Response”, 119 Ludlow, NYC, “Solo Solo-Solo”, Roten 2, Gothenburg, “You Missed It”, Grace Exhibition Space, “Flowers of Habit”, School of Art+Design, Purchase.
