Prate (1999)

Prate is a mystery. Even though I read an interview about them (or should I say her,) recently on a website, Prate is a unique experience. Recently the Prate portal, www.prate.com, opens with the maxim, "if you would seek goodness, seek those who are good." I seek goodness in design, and therefore I seek Prate, but, what is Prate? Maybe this should be rephrased as "Is what Prate?" since this trademark Prate phrase seems to have some sort of intrinsically funny property to the designer. Confused? Read on. Confused? Read on. Prate's web presence is a clickable path through a set of what seem to me to be Photoshop and Illustrator compositions. I remember reading that the Prate girl designs web pages for mobile phones for pay, but she is also handy with a photoshop lasso. She serves up her own raucous takes on contemporary style, the New Media meltdown, and Engrish, on her site, never removing her tongue from her cheek, and always making everything look like she just threw it together. And it always looks good! She is way too skilled. Midway through the clickfest (which must be hell for dial-up users,) she proclaims, "Corleon/we can go toe to toe." God knows what this is about, but I bet she is planning on doing one of the "vs." collaborations that are so popular with net designers these days. Her site is also informative, as she has purposely left a few open directories hidden in the navigation chaos that have source files, choice links, and recommendations for further reading. www.prate.com
