Artist Statement

The work is inspired by several journal articles publishing up-to-date scientific data regarding the effects of global warming and deforestation. Statistics show the current onset of global warming is directly due in part to human cause, rather than long-term climate change. Deforestation accounts for 15% of global carbon emissions, by both the slash-and-burn technique, and reduction of photosynthesis responsible for an estimated 32 million acres of land cut per-year between 2000-2009.

The piece is kept short and looped to exemplify that this problem needs to be prompted immediately. The work is built in glitch manner to grab the viewer’s attention leaving them with questions, inspiring them to research into it more. The use of color is also very important in understanding the piece. The deep blues in the ocean allude to tranquility, while the shades of green associate the piece with life. In contrast, the harsh grey colors speak towards pollution and destruction, whereas the oranges and reds symbolize warning and death. The falling pixilation of the tree downward alludes to the issue of deforestation and the trees falling to the ground. The clip plays forward to show the possible, and then in reverse suggesting we can inverse the destruction we have already caused.

This issue is something that I constantly think about and means a lot to me. I am extremely motivated towards bringing awareness towards this subject, engaging viewers to make small changes in their own life patterns, as I myself strive to do as well.
