Artist Statement
Gender roles have existed since the beginning of time. These ideals of how men and women should act and where they belong in society. It differs throughout different cultures but every culture has different roles for women than men. In most cultures, women are meant to be inferior to men and this still a problem today. When we think of a baby girl, we think pink. A boy: blue. When we think of children toys, girls are meant to have dolls and boys, trucks. This are only the surface to what leads up to bigger inequalities. Men are supposed to act tough and dominate with no emotion and women are supposed to be emotional and “sissy” like. These ideals have been relatively the same throughout history so, how do we change this? By breaking down the gender roles within one household at a time. By sharing dolls and trucks and legos between both genders, and not only having girls in pink and boys in blue, a ripple effect may start. This in turn helps change the way we are engrained to think.
This project is meant to convey this idea above. The core was made with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The details made in Illustrator and Photoshop. The user is meant to follow the storyline throughout the different pages and interact with each page. I added links to youtube about different barbies. One saying “math is tough, party dresses are fun…” and the other to Barbie Liberation Organization. They switched the voices of Barbies and G.I Joes to tackle gendered influences of the messages each doll speaks.
