The Virgin has her white lilies, Golgotha rests on Adam’s skull, but I have my own set of iconography. High-heeled shoes have long been representative of power, imbued with sovereignty well before I ever slipped such symbols on my own pedicured feet. King Louis XIV of France wears a pair himself in Hyacinthe Rigaud’s famous portrait of the monarch, although I dare say that mine are more appealing. I may not claim dominion over the French countryside, but I’ve conquered many a hallway in these little babies. High heels lengthen a woman’s legs, and they certainly widen their prospects. I slip on these particular symbols of what I am to acquire symbols of what I should be. Chanel bags, tickets to Nice, weekly facials - all of these things become a part of my picture if I start out with the right collection of symbols. It just takes one critical reading of my imagery to understand my meaning.
