Artist Statement
Oh the darling butterflies, the beauty queens of the insect world, watch them flutterdelicately around this ornate vase, without a care in the world. But oh-ho! This was not always the case; these butterflies came from humble beginnings. Abandoned by their mother before birth, they soon revealed themselves to be pseudo-warriors of the undergrowth. Violently marked and unforgiving to the eye, they kept a low profile, for this was not their true calling. They were positively gentle in nature… it was all a facade. It hurt to see how their unsightly spines repelled even the burliest of men! Oh how cruel, how unjust! To be born in the wrong body is the ultimate travesty. [Kim Shillam]
