SandScapes (2013)

Virtual cumulative sand art

net.art
Full Description

Sandscap.es is a simple cumulative algorithmic graphical composition which is created through the (limited and perhaps unconscious) interaction of the users who watch it. It is meant to resemble a sort of 2-dimensional infinite sand-art bottle where layers of pixels of different colors are accumulated on top of one another. Every time a user visits the site, pixels of (slightly different shades of) a given color start falling from the top at an approximately constant rate. The user's falling pixels finally settle on top of other pixels which had been left by previous users. The composition has a fixed width, while its height is not limited and will grow as more and more visitors come to see it.

It is possible that multiple users are connected simultaneously at a given time. In this case, each user will only see her own pixels falling, but she will see the other users' pixels appear on the "ground" once they are deposited. Each user also sees on-screen information about the other currently connected users in (almost) real time.
