The Likes of Brother Cream Cat (2013)

The likes of Brother Cream Cat 尖東忌廉哥 讚!, a network art project by Helen Pritchard and Winnie Soon, explores the network as a co-joined experience of humans and non human animals with a popular Facebook cat "Brother Cream" (a cat that lives in a 24-hour convenience store with the shop owner in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong). In 2011 "Brother Cream Cat" walked out of his shop and went missing, his fans created a Facebook account to find him, and on his return he became 'Facebook Famous' through his 'lots of likes'. Since then he commands over 1000 visitors per day at his shop in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The exaggerated 'likes' of this cream cat, permeate the network through the performativity of code and the dynamics of networked activity. The project makes this apparent by continuously parsing and distorting Facebook data (without permission) through a browser add-on. As the add-on runs the 'Likes of Brother Cream Cat' , "Brother Cream's" (cattime) data is parsed from Facebook and generates mutated traces in real-time. Giving a glimpse of the computational ecologies of cream cat and his entanglements of gifting, fan fiction, commerce, geo/biopolitics, data laws, copyright, carbon emissions, social media, tourism, rare mineral mining, travel agency advertising and other internet famous animals.
