Full Description
The Butterfly Effect, towards systematic evolution of favorable conditions.
The Butterfly Effect is a video performance by Edwin Stolk. The title of this video refers to the chaos theory where the Butterfly Effect stands for the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place (in a deterministic nonlinear system) can result in large differences to a later state.
In general Stolk communicates by using everyday objects in an unfamiliar context. His ideal visual interventions are based on participation and rooted in society itself. He calls the outcome situations, which are realized with the available resources within a certain setting. These situations are always competing with the presented visual order and reflect on actual issues within a certain surrounding.
To find the right conditions for these visual interventions is a difficult process. Society is ordered to serve economic standards and public space is arranged to support this process. The government guides society within this framework.
The Butterfly Effect is created after Stolk negotiated for more than a year with several authorities to create competing visual situations based on participation with 'share holders' at several public and semi public locations. Till today none of these projects were realized because of a lack of support. It shows how important it is today to develop new strategies for visual opposition.

Artist Statement
Trained as a visual artist I am available as lecturer, researcher, adviser, for presentations and always searching for new collaborations.
All my activities generate insights for my ongoing research after the public sphere. All experience based projects provide knowledge over our shared and supported idea of reality. I want to stimulate people's involvement in the way our idea of reality is designed. My interventions are trajectories rather than destinations, they try to improve the level of transparency in power structures and innovate the democratic process. I organize collective laboratories by liberating institutionalized knowledge and resources. Together we form effective opposition to existing forms of crowd control and develop alternatives.
Thank you for your interest. Don't hesitate to contact me.
