Analog Syncopation (2013)

by Blu3RSX

It was by chance how this video was originally conceived. My wife and I were previewing images on our Canon Powershot A570IS via our television when I accidentally switched the camera to record video. It was then when I first noticed the image being recorded appeared to be an infinite layered projection. While experimenting with the different visual cues created from my interaction with the camera's focal length from the television, I was reminded with how I attached to modern display technology which was by the graphic representation of data. My earliest such memory was with an oscilloscope used to display wavelengths and frequencies. That, which was typically used as a tool of science, had an additional value as an artistic instrument. The technology to do so was based on a cathode-ray tube.

Only until recently has it become the norm to see data via digital technology thanks to advancements in manufacturing which also include cost-savings methods of production making these products more widely accessible. Cathode-ray tube televisions, like what I used to create this video, are clearly on the road to antiquity.

Syncopation can be defined as "a shifting of the normal accent, usually by stressing the normally unaccented beats" and represents what I hoped to achieve as a means of creating this video; by shifting focus on a technology that will soon become a faint reminder of how things used to be. The end result produced an amalgamation of colors, shapes, and organic patterns with roots in the analog and digital realms.
