The animation Solar Cycle 24 was created for a series of 15 nightly public projections presented by chashama.org at chashama 1351 between February 23 and March 10, 2013. For 15 consecutive nights, a looped 12:30 minute animation was projected onto three large storefront windows, only visible during the dark hours between dusk and dawn. Planned to coincide with an actual astronomical phenomenon with the same name, Solar Cycle 24 is a digital stop-motion animation inspired by northern lights: the magnetic activity caused by solar storms that ebb and flow on an 11-year cycle. The current solar cycle, number 24, was expected to peak during the early part of 2013.

Artist Statement
Non-narrative and mostly abstract, my video-animations are by themselves perhaps best understood as “temporal digital paintings”; visually metamorphic and deliberately paced, they are open-ended vignettes of unrestricted atmosphere. Potentially real time interactive (i.e. when the opportunity to engage an audience presents itself), this new body of work is quiet and contemplative, and intended to be experienced on large-scale.
