Full Description

The Apparatus is an exhibit which consists of a group of interactive objects, sculptures, texts, and diagrams that evoke an invention laboratory. This exhibit suggests its visitors to combine the irony that technology can solve everything with poetry used as catharsis. It questions the purchase of prefabricated solutions for singular conflicts. It criticizes the offers of happiness and wellbeing through objects of massive consumption promoted by universalizing discourse. Technology as a basis for comfort, modern and occidental pharmacopeia- considered as the natural cure-, the daily consumption objects which prevents us from questioning about singular and the particular traits in each culture, in their own illness, suffering, enjoyment, and healing attempt against cultural diversity.

The exhibit consists of ten objects/prototypes that emulate a laboratory. The visitor interacts with the different devices providing and using different elements in the installation.

The Apparatus are “ Sunset Anguish Extractor”, “ Rusty Friendship Humidifier in Oil”, “Wasted Years Resignifyer”. “ Transconverter of Undefined Moods”, “Cystic Thoughts Extractor”, “ Guilty Feelings Grinder”, “ Wrapping, covers the body in difficult times”, “ Desomberfyer/ omblifyer”, “ Deintelectualizer”, “Psychic processes accelerator”, “Portable Decider Device”.

The Apparatus demonstrate, and at the same time mock, our insatiable search for the immediate and for quick answers. They propose another time and space. How long can it take to get rid of those thoughts that seem to have no end? Where do you put the fluid to make social bond easier? How do we turn our guilt into a material that could make us lighter? “Click” to twist our repetitions, “push the button” to save us from our dark places, “put the blind on” to prevent distractions from vain objects; to want to sleep and wake up when “everything is over”, or wishing a “time machine” that would allow us to modify the present, etc. All these are expressions of our language – that which constitutes our reality? – that place in the devices, in object, wishes to alter the course of reality. As psychological electrical appliances, the devices play with the desire for and the tranquility brought about by the existence of quick solutions to daily discomfort. Technologies, machines, the external construction that would keep internal demons away, those from which we cannot get away, even with our strongest defense. The Apparatus is an installation which allows multiple interpretations since it counts with explicitly interactive features, texts and other aspects that leave room for interpretation. The Apparatus was awarded a grant to be produced on the Spanish Cultural Center in Buenos Aires (CCEBA) in 2010.
