Walnut Alpha Display (2012)

Inspired by mechanical display technology such as the split-flap display, the Walnut Alpha Display is a wooden electromechanical alphabetical display. It can display letters that it receives via serial or it can be pre-programmed to display messages.

Full Description

The Walnut Alpha Display is made out of a solid block of walnut which has been hollowed out with a CNC router. The letters are etched onto an acrylic gear, which is driven by a microcontroller-driven stepper motor.

Artist Statement

While digital display technology has made electromechanical displays obsolete and expensive, there's still a lot of appeal for these slow-moving displays. I created the Walnut Alpha Display so that the viewer can enjoy the sound and motion of communicating text information.
