ON THE WEB is a translation of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 classic, On The Road, crafted, or restaged, for viewing in a web browser. This is the second time the artist has been inspired by Kerouac’s road novel/muse. Her hand-made letterpress-printed paper bag give-away was presented at City Lights Bookstore in 2007 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication.

For this interpretation of Kerouac’s novel, every appearance of the word, “road” was crossed out in a copy of the book and replaced with the word, “web” (the artist counted over 150 uses of the word “road” in the original manuscript). The project tests how applicable Kerouac’s road commentary is in the contemporary landscape of the web browser. Scrolling and browsing today is as popular as hitchhiking and road trips were in 1950s American culture. In many cases, the work still speaks to wanderers—whether they are hitchhiking the open road or browsing the information superhighway.

After her pen and ink demarcation, each page was scanned and uploaded into a web page design reflecting the original manuscript scroll, enabling the user/reader to scroll through the complete text in a single web page. Click the last occurrence of the word, “web,” on any page where it is found to skim the book from the first “road/web” phrase to the next to the last.
