imbue (2011)

imbue is an interactive installation that deals with reflection, perception, self, and narcissism. The main projection in the space displays a video transitioning between being blurred beyond recognition to being a more clear and recognizable figure. The second projection is a digitally created reflection pool on the gallery floor in front of the main projection wall. In the reflection pool, water ripples and splashes while the viewer's image is “reflected” on its surface. As the main projection moves into focus, it reveals the figure cleansing his face with water from the pool. The figure is, in essence, washing in a pool of his own narcissism, however the elements of narcissism here serve as tools of self-reflection, not self-measurement, assessment or love. The pool offers reflection as a conduit, through which further information about the self can be obtained. The digital reflection invites the viewers into this realm with the figure, in order to meditate on their own image and, in turn, their self.
